Why Is The Curt C13420 Hitch Weight Rating Higher Than My 2022 Kia Telluride Can Handle?

I am looking at getting the Curt C13420 hitch installed on my new 2022 Kia Telluride, but I have a question. I saw that the hitch is rated to 750 pounds of tongue weight, but my owners manual says I have 500 pounds of tongue weight. The towing capacities matched so I'm not worried about that, but since the hitch is rated higher, do I go off that number or the lower one in the manual? An explanation as to why it's different would be nice if you know. I am probably over thinking this and confusing myself, so any insight would be appreciated.

I will start by saying that you should always go with the lowest rated component you are using for the maximum capacity you can handle. I know that sounds kind of odd, but as your 2022 Kia Telluride is rated to 500 pounds of maximum tongue weight capacity, this does mean the Curt # C13420 will be limited to this amount as well. So do not exceed that you found in your owner's manual.

Hitches are almost always rated higher than the vehicle can handle as they are tested to pretty extreme tolerances. This is done to make sure there is no possibility of failure when being used. If they were tested to just get to the capacity of the vehicle, odds are it would be fine, but with something like this, it is one of those "If It's Worth Doing, It's Worth Overdoing" kind of situations.
