For your 2022 Subaru Ascent I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # e55ZR. This hitch is made in the US and has a rugged matte black powder coating finish that will better match any black trim on your vehicle and hide any scratches better than hitches with a gloss black powder coating. This hitch has a maximum gross trailer weight capacity of 5,000lbs and maximum tongue weight capacity of 750lbs and is rated for use with a weight distribution system. Note: The capacity of the hitch does not increase the capacity of your vehicle so you will need to review your manual and go with whichever rating is lower.
If you do not already have a 7-way connector I recommend installing the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118290. This T-One connector wiring harness plugs directly into your existing wiring with no cutting, splicing or tapping required. The ModuLite reduces the strain on your vehicle's wiring system. You can use the # PK12711U mounting bracket to attach the 7-way port to your trailer hitch.
For a ball mount kit I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500lbs # 989900. It's a great starter kit with a 1-7/8" hitch ball and 2" hitch ball. The shanks will provide a drop of 2" or 4" and a rise of 1" or 3" to keep your trailer level while towing.
