Parts Needed To Add A Brake Controller To A 2018 Ford F-150 With A Factory 4 Flat

Question:

I have a 2018 Ford f150 with just a four-way flat and a class 3 Hitch. Im looking to install a brake controller just wondering what parts do I need. I do not have any controllers in the truck now but there is a plug behind the dash for one. So I was looking for a controller wire harness to the back and a 7-way round.

Though your 2018 Ford F-150 does have a plug under the dash, not all the wires are connected and you will need extra wiring to get it working, This can be quite the pain to do, so it is actually easier to just run all new wire for the 7 Way.

If you take a look at our Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, this will piggyback off your existing 4 Flat and will include all the wiring, circuit breakers, 7 Way, and bracketry needed to complete this task. This will also be spliced into some factory wiring to complete everything and I included an install video that should help with this.

You now have a couple options for brake controllers. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885, which is being installed in the video, is a great option. This can handle trailers with up to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies) and will work with both electric or electric-over-hydraulic systems, so it is powerful and versatile. The only downside is that it does kind of limit itself on where and how it can be mounted. The accelerometer does need to be level, and the term "knee knocker" used for these style of controller is fairly accurate. But again, this is a great controller and the # 22292 will plug into the back of the controller and the port under your dash, making the install quick and easy.

However, we do also have the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR. This has one of the most, if not the most, clean looks after the install as only the control knob will be visible. This also has the # 331-TPH-007 that will plug directly to the controller and the port under your dash, but the box can be mounted any way that fits up and out of the way, so it keeps everything a lot more clear. This is a little less powerful and can only handle up to 3 axles (6 brake assemblies), but is also compatible with electric or electric-over-hydraulic systems. I really like this controller and it would be the way I would go if I were to install a brake controller on my truck.
