RV Sway Control, Stabilization, and Suspension Enhancement

The time you spend in your RV is supposed to be relaxing. However, if the motorhome is difficult to control on the road, this can result in a white-knuckle driving experience that leaves you exhausted. If your RV sways from side to side (especially when taking corners), has difficulty staying in its lane, is pulled around by a flat-towed vehicle, or is otherwise difficult to control, there are multiple products available to increase stability and enhance suspension. These aftermarket solutions are custom-designed to fit your RV, so you can find the perfect product (or products) and hit the road.

Anti-Sway Bars & Stabilization

There are three main types of products used to control RV sway and enhance stability: anti-sway bars (front and rear), axle stabilizers (front and rear), and steering stabilizers. The type of stabilizer you need will depend on what type of driving issue(s) you are experiencing. You aren't limited to one product type, either—in fact, the more stability products you add to your setup, the better your ride will be.

Suspension Enhancement

There are also three main types of suspension enhancement used for motorhomes: air springs, jounce-style springs, and leaf springs. Think of suspension enhancement as the side-dish to the main course in the world of stabilization. You'll want to use a stabilization product as the first line of defense against sway and body roll, but used in conjunction, suspension enhancement will provide further benefits.Rear suspension is recommended for the greatest ride control, while front suspension enhancement is ideal if the front of your RV sags when you extend slide-outs. Suspension enhancement is custom fit for your specific motorhome chassis. To view products designed for your RV, use the "Shop Fitguide" links below.

Which Type of Stabilization or Suspension Enhancement Do I Need?

We'll recommend the best solution for your problem. Click for more information if your RV experiences any of the following:

Our Recommendation: Steering Stabilizer + Axle Stabilizer

Steering Stabilizers

A common complaint from RV drivers is that their motorhome is exhausting to drive. If you find yourself constantly oversteering and working to keep your vehicle in line, and you're certain that if you were to blow out a front tire you would completely lose control of your vehicle, then you need a steering stabilizer. Steering stabilizers work by attaching to your vehicle's steering tie rod on one end and to the chassis frame on the other. By maintaining tension between the two components, these stabilizers offer you tighter, more controlled steering.A steering stabilizer will:
  • Improve handling and driver control
  • Minimize vehicle wander and loose steering
  • Reduce "rut tracking", which occurs when your RV hits an uneven patch of pavement and is pulled off the smooth road
  • Return vehicle to center in event of crosswinds, potholes, or tire blowout
  • Reduce oversteering by dampening rapid steering movement
  • Reduce driver fatigue

Axle Stabilizers

Axle stabilizers are a simple way to improve the basic handling characteristics of your vehicle. Axle stabilizers work by creating a sturdy connection between your vehicle's axle and chassis, essentially holding the axle in place and steadying the axle both in normal driving conditions and over uneven terrain. An axle stabilizer will:
  • Reduce loose, uncontrolled steering
  • Minimize wander and rut tracking
  • Control excessive axle side play
  • Reduce sway from crosswinds and passing motorists
  • Reduce excessive vibration
  • Reduce driver fatigue

Our Recommendation: Anti-Sway Bar + Axle Stabilizer

Anti-Sway Bar

An anti-sway bar does just what its name suggests: reduces the side-to-side sway of your vehicle in order to give you greater control when driving. Anti-sway bars connect your motorhome's frame to its front or rear axle, using the axle as a brace to balance your motorhome's shifting weight as you maneuver it. Adding or upgrading a rear anti-sway bar is the single best solution for improving your RV's ride quality. Front anti-sway bars can also be added for additional improvement. Many large vehicles have factory anti-sway bars, but Roadmaster and Blue Ox have both crafted aftermarket bars made of exceptionally strong, durable 4140 steel (compared to the standard 1020 steel typically used in anti-sway applications). The polyurethane bushings used for both systems are durable and flexible, providing greater support for the unit, which in turn leads to a longer-lasting system. An anti-sway bar will:
  • Minimize sway and body roll, especially when cornering
  • Diminish effects of crosswinds, passing motorists, and cargo
  • Balance vehicle weight across axles
  • Create a more level ride on uneven surfaces
  • Reduce driver fatigue
