Determining If A Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier Will Allow Rear Door Of 2000 Roadtrek 190V To Open

Question:

I have a 2000 Roadtrek 190V, it is a Dodge B3500 van, I am looking for a new spare tire carrier which will tilt or swing away so that I can open the back door. The clearance from the top of the receiver if I measure from the top side of something in the receiverto the bottom of the rear door is 11 inches, it looks like this carrier is just over 12 inches, could it be modified, or do you have something else? The current spare carrier is mounted to the door hinges and the weight of the spare is destroying them. Also, would the additional torque of moving the tire out combined with the bike rack be significant in terms of tongue weight? Thanks! this is regarding your part # RM-195225?

I have another option for you, but you are correct that the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225 you were looking at will measure 12-1/4" from the top of the shank in the receiver to the top of the post that sticks up. Since you are needing 11" or less to open your rear door this will not work for you. I do not recommend modifying the carrier in any way as it will void the warranty of the component.

Instead the Roadmaster Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195125 may work for you as it allows the tire to fold down to the ground, and does not stick up more then about 8". Now depending on the ground clearance on your 2000 Roadtrek 190V this may not allow you to open the rear doors but there is a way to check.

Remove your spare tire and sit it on the ground standing up near the rear bumper. With the spare tire there try and open up the door. If the door opens then the # RM-195125 will give you plenty of clearance to open the rear door will the tire is installed.

If you cannot open the door with the tire there then the # RM-195125 will NOT allow you to open the rear door. If this is the case the only option would be reaching out to a local fabrication shop to see if they can custom make you a spare tire carrier.

Using a spare tire carrier like this will reduce the capacities of your trailer hitch by 33%, so you will need to make sure the weight of the carrier (44lbs), the weight of your spare tire, and the weight of your bike rack and bikes does not exceed this lowered rating.

I included a video of the # RM-195125 for you to take a look at.
