The way to tell if your truck is a new body style or a heritage model (old body style) is to check for the wiring harness at the rear of the vehicle on the driver side frame rail. you may have to lower the spare tire to see the harness if it is present.
If your truck is the New body style then you will need the Tow Package Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector, part number 118247, to wire a 7-way connector on your pickup. You will be able to find the wiring harness on the drivers side frame rail at the rear of the vehicle by lowering the spare tire. You will also have to install the supplied relay in the fuse panel that is located behind the passengers side kick panel.
If the truck you have is a F-150 Heritage model then the wiring for the 118247 wiring harness will not be located on the drivers side frame rail of your vehicle. You will need the 118344 wiring harness which will connect in line with the taillights and provide a 4-way trailer connector. Once you have this installed you will need the 4-way to 7-way connector. You connect the 4-way connector on the vehicle to the back of the adapter. This connection will supply stop, turn and taillights to your new 4-way and 7-way connector.
Then you must wire for the other functions you will need to power on your trailer. The blue wire will be ran to the electric brake controllers blue wire and the black wire will be ran to the battery or a fused terminal which supplies 12 volt power under your hood. After these connections are wired you have the auxiliary or reverse light wire left, which is yellow or orange, to wire if you need that circuit for your trailer, if this wire is not needed you can just tape it up out of the way.
