Options for Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2004 Ford F150 Equipped with 4-Pole

Question:

Great web site! I have a 2004 Ford F-150 with a 4 pole. 30717 looks like it would work fine. Do you have a video for installation on an earlier Ford F-150? I assume I would need a brake controller for in the cab. Which one would you recommend? I would also need the mounting bracket and extra cable. What else would I need for installation? Thanks

Although the # 30717 will work, I have a better suggestion for you. If your F150 is the New Body style, use part # 118247. If you have the Old Body style, use # 118242. Either connector will plug inline with your existing trailer connector, allowing you to retain the function of your existing 4-pole. Either kit includes the necessary fuses and relays to activate the remainder of the tow package circuits. Granted, this is a more expensive option, but it will be a very quick and easy plug-and-play installation.

A mounting bracket for the 7-way, # PK12711U is sold separately.

If the trailer you are towing is equipped with electric brakes, and you would like them to actuate, you will indeed need to install a brake controller. I can highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885.

You will also need the # 3035-P wiring adapter. One end of the adapter will plug into a Tekonsha brake controller, the other end plugs into the connector located under the dash, as you can see in the photo I have edited for you).

If you would rather install the 30717, use the # 37185 instead, which also provides a 4-pole connector. I will link you to an install video showing how to install the connector. Keep in mind, you might need some extra fuses and relays to activate he 12-volt accessory circuit that feeds the 7-way which are available from the dealer. The brake controller would install in the same manner as described above.

I will also link you to a video showing a P2 being installed in a 2004 F150.
