Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5

Question:

I have a 13.5foot Perception kayak I want to haul on my Mazda CX5 AWD. The car doesnt have any rails or cross-bars so Id have to buy and install both of them if I want to use J cradles. It looks like this product would work with the kayak loaded upside down but I have a question about loading up the kayak. It doesnt appear theres any way I can rig anything up on the cars side to load the kayak. Is my only alternative to put down rollers or padded material on the back hatch and push it up from the back. Also, would you recommend tying down both bow and stern if going on anything but smaller roads? If you have other cost effective alternatives besides the YO7418, Id love to hear about them, even if they involve getting rails and cross bars. Thanks, Drew

A solution like the # Y07418 looks like a good idea on paper, but in practice it has some drawbacks. The straps that secure the pads to the roof must run through the vehicle along the ceiling. This can interfere with the driver and passenger's headroom. The fact that the straps are closed in the doors will allow the straps to wick moisture into the passenger cabin of the vehicle, so if it rains, you're going to get wet. If you weren't planning on transporting the kayak very far or very often, this can be a good solution. However, if you'll be carrying the kayak fairly frequently for a fair distance at highway speeds, I don't think you'd ultimately be
happy with this alternative and would do better using an actual roof rack.

If you decide you'd rather go with an actual roof rack, Inno offers a reasonably priced roof rack. You can install an Inno roof rack using the following parts:

-50 inch square profile crossbars, part # INB127
-Roof Rack Feet, part # INSUT
-Vehicle specific fit kit, part # INK758

With the roof rack in place, you'd then choose a kayak carrier. A pad system like the Rhino Rack # RRRWP05 would be a inexpensive option, but you'd also need bow and stern tie-downs like # MPG306.

For a J-style carrier, the etrailer brand # e98878 carrier is a great value as it includes all the straps, tie downs and even hood and trunk anchors that make securing the kayak easy. With the addition of a slide mat like # TH854, you should be able to push the kayak into position from the rear of the vehicle without difficulty.

Due to the fact that the kayak will extend up over the vehicle hood and beyond the roof to the rear, I'd urge you to use bow/stern tie-downs when transporting the kayak.
