What is the Purpose of the Power Wire for the Tow Ready Wiring Kit on a 2012 Lexus RX350
Question:
1 I have seen other instructions that advise you tap directly into the right and left tail light wires for running lights, brake lights, and turn signals. Can I simply just do that instead of having to wire a separate power source from the battery? Is the concern that there is not enough power in these leads for the lights on the vehicle AND the trailer lights so they may all be dimmer than they should be? 2 Your demo is for a 2005 RX330. Any idea if I need to remove all those same compartments, etc. for a 2012 RX350? I am concerned about how much trim and compartments need to be removed to get access and whether it will go back together properly.

You are on the right track as to why there is a dedicated power wire for the Tow Ready Trailer Harness # 118478. The reason for the power wire is too prevent the delicate tail light circuits of your 2012 Lexus RX350 from being overloaded and popping fuses or damaging the circuits all together.
Running the power wire to the front of a vehicle is not too difficult. I just did it on my car the other weekend and it was pretty straightforward. I attached an FAQ article on this for you to check out to give you some guidance if needed.
The installation process for the # 118478 on your vehicle will be very similar to the video for the 2005 RX350 that you referenced. However, it might vary slightly since your vehicle is newer. It may seem like a lot of interior components to remove but if you take your time everything should go back together just fine. It may help to take pictures as you are removing items to help remind you how it all goes back together.
I also attached installation instructions for this product that shows how the interior pieces come out.
