Recommended Mounting Bracket for 7 Way Connector on 2019 VW Tiguan

Question:

We have a 4-pin connector on our 2019 VW Tiguan. Our new camper has a 7-pin round connector and we had to buy an adapter to bring it home. The holes on the adapter do not line up with the holes on the VW bracket. Is there some kind of other adapter that does not have a wire or would I need to use something like this magnetic bracket to attach the adapter to the vehicle?

We've got what you're looking for! I recommend using the Curt No-Drill Bracket for 6-Way or 7-Way Round Trailer Connector Mounting Bracket - Long # C57202 which will connect to the hitch on your 2019 VW Tiguan and then the Mounting Bracket for 7-Way # 18138 to connect the bracket to your new 7 way connector. I'll also note that what you've got there is not an adapter, but a full 7 way connector which will control the lights and when used with a brake controller, send a signal to the trailer brakes. The part you've got is going to be almost identical to the # ETBC7 or # ETBC7L kit that we have and does require some additional installation in order to be fully functional. I've gone ahead and linked some installation videos for you, as well as some helpful articles we've created on wiring a 7 way connector to help you get everything else wired up. If your trailer does not have brakes, you can continue to use the 7 way connector as it is, but you will be missing the reverse light function and 12v auxiliary power to charge any on board (the trailer) batteries. You'll use the yellow wire on the 7 way connector to connect those to your vehicle's reverse light function and the black wire to connect the 12v power wire to the battery.

If your trailer has brakes equipped on it, you will need a brake controller to engage them. For this, I recommend using the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller # C51180 since it's the easiest to install brake controller on the market and does not require any hard-wiring inside the vehicle. This brake controller will plug directly into your new 7 way connector and then accept the 7 way connector on your trailer to allow you to safely tow this trailer with your VW Tiguan. The Echo senses the deceleration of your tow vehicle and applies the brakes on your trailer proportionally, but can also be manually controlled with your smartphone as long as it is running either an IOS 8.0 or newer, or Android 4.4 or newer operating system. It really is the easiest to install and use brake controller on the market and would be a great choice for your 2019 VW Tiguan.

As I mentioned, I linked some videos and articles to this answer that you may want to have a look at as well.
