Using Stabilizing Straps on a Cargo Hauler in the Curt Hitch on a 2012 Honda CR-V

Question:

You mention that a strap is needed for cargo carriers but only talk about the strap intended for bike racks. Is the same strap used? What is recommended way to attach straps to vehicle and the cargo carrier? This is for 2012 Honda CR-V will uses the Curt 13119 2 inch hitch.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap, # 18050, is designed to help provide extra support to the receiver when carrying hitch mounted bike racks and cargo carriers. For the 2012 Honda CR-V the Curt hitch, # C13119, requires a support strap for all non-trailer loads for manufacturer warranty requirements.

To use the suppport strap with a cargo carrier like the Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier, # C18145, you would need to loop one end of the strap through the cargo carrier top rail and attach the rubber coated hook on the other end to the lip at the top of the rear door. One of my co-workers did a short video showing how the strap is used, see helpful link.

My personal recommendation would be to go with a trailer hitch that does not require the use of a support strap with a cargo carrier or bike rack. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, # 75742, can be used without the support strap and would work well with either the Curt cargo carrier mentioned before or the Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier, # 63153.
