Installation Difficulty of Curt Trailer Hitch 15409 for 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 With Factory Hitch

Question:

I have a 2006 dodge ram 2500 diesel mega cab with a standard 2 x 2 tow package factory install. In looking at the ratings on this, the only rating I can see is on the bumper, which says 500 lbs tongue weight and 5,000 lbs towing weight. From what Ive read that would apply to a bumper mounted ball, not necessarily the tow package installed. The tow receiver is the rounded tube type that fits under the bumper and appears to be welded to the frame, but I cannot determine its ratings as their are no markings on it. From what Ive read this appears to be more like a Class 3 receiver. Im looking to increase to a Class 4 as the total capacity would not take on a Class 5 as appears to be with the model you offer. Is your model something I could install myself or do I need a professional to do so? Do you carry a tow package that is Class 4 for my vehicle that is 2 x 2 receiver? Does this install under my current tow receiver or do I have to remove the current tow package to install it? Any other information you might have would be helpful. Thank you!

You will definitely be able to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class V XD - 2" # C15409 on your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 yourself without the need for a professional. The reason for that is because no drilling is required to install the hitch, it will bolt on underneath your current trailer hitch, as you can see by the cut out of the linked installation instructions I added for you as well as a photo and review a customer sent in.

The Curt is a Class V hitch, and to answer your other question there is a Class IV 2" hitch that will fit, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 41929, although (installation-wise) there is no benefit of going to this hitch as opposed to the Curt. The installation will be more difficult because it does require drilling as opposed to the simple lining up of the bolt holes that the Curt hitch requires.

I have added a link to a video install of the Curt Trailer Hitch # C15409 on a Ram for you to check out, and while it won't be exactly the same because this one does not have an OEM hitch, you can use it as a guide to get an idea of what the installation process requires.
