Trailer Friction Sway Control Bar Does Not Stop Trailer From Swaying When Trucks Pass

Question:

I have a 2012 Ford Expedition XLT EL 5.4 V8 pulling a 30 ft. flagstaff V-Lite. The trailer is set up with one Reese 83660L2 friction sway control bar and Im having trouble when large trucks pass and in high winds. Is this due to the bar not being adjusted correctly or do I need something else done to stop the swaying?

You may need to adjust the Reese sway control bar, # 83660, for more tension to reduce the sway from larger trucks passing. If facing the handle, turn it clockwise for more tension. However, if you over tighten the bar you can end up damaging the bar or the trailer when making turns.

What I think is happening is that you have a trailer that is large enough and heavy enough for 2 friction bars. If a trailer weighs more than 6,000 pounds and/or is 26 feet or longer, then you need to use a total of 2 bars, one on each side. I have included a link to our weight distribution and sway control FAQ article for you.
