What Needs to Be Considered to go to a Larger Trailer Tire Size
Question:
currently have trailer with the small 12 tires. It does have a 2 1/2inch diameter hub and a five bolt rim. But, thought increasing to a standard trailer tire to gain ground clearance, but mostly to have less wear on the bearings would be in order. How does one go about doing so. DO I need a whole new axle?,...or is there retrofits for this application?

There are two main things to consider if you would like to use a larger size wheel and tire on your trailer. The first thing is the bolt pattern of your current hub. You will need to determine the bolt pattern of your hub so you can determine which bolt pattern rim you should purchase.
The next thing you will need to consider is clearance. If there are wheel fenders you will need to consider vertical clearance. You will also need to consider the clearance from the wheel to the inside of the frame. If clearance is tight there, it may be difficult to go to a larger tire.
If you add ground clearance you will be raising the center of gravity on the trailer which could potentially cause more sway on your trailer.
I attached a video and an FAQ on how to determine bolt pattern as well as an FAQ on trailer wheels and tire for you to check out also.
