Recommended Tow Package Parts for 2018 Ford F-150

Question:

Hello, I am researching purchase options for a 2018 F150 2.7L SuperCrew 4WD and want to be sure that if I buy one without a factory towing package that I can add one later. I would likely purchase the integrated Ford trailer brake controller. What parts and steps would be needed to add a hitch receiver and upgrade the 4 pin harness to a 7 pin? Is there a plug that can install like the OEM 7 pin on the bumper? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages of an air bag kit that is adjustable over one that is fixed? Thanks in advance!

We have a nice selection of custom trailer hitches available for the 2018 Ford F-150 that isn't equipped with the factory hitch. I specifically recommend the Curt Class IV Receiver Hitch # C26HR because it offers the highest capacity available (10,000 pounds towing and 1,000 pounds tongue weight) and is made right here in the USA. This custom hitch will bolt right up to existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation that should only take around 40 minutes.

I have attached an installation video that you can also use for reference.

If the F-150 you purchase only comes equipped with the factory 4-Way connector then the best way to upgrade it to a functional 7-Way will be with the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. Some models of this truck will have the brake and hot lead wires already ran to the driver's side frame rail but these can be really hard to access and additional wire would still be needed. This is why going with the complete # ETBC7 kit is still the best route. I have attached the complete installation instructions that you can look through.

There is not a plug-in harness available to upgrade a factory 4-Way connector to a 7-Way on the 2018 Ford F-150.

Just keep in mind that most likely the factory integrated brake controller is not something you will be able to add afterwards. Typically these can only be installed at the factory, and if you decide to get this option your truck should also come equipped with a 7-Way connector.

If you decide to go with an aftermarket brake controller instead I really like the new Curt Echo # C51180 because of its really easy install process hat just requires you to plug it directly into the truck's 7-Way and pair it to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Your smartphone is what you will use to adjust any settings or activate the manual override so you won't need to add an additional component in the cab.

I have included a short video demonstration on this product that you can check out as well.

Then for suspension enhancement, the advantage of an air bag kit like the excellent Firestone Ride-Rite # F2582 over a fixed jounce-style spring system like the Timbren # TFR1504E, both of which are confirmed to fit this truck, is that they are going to allow for an overall smoother ride. Since the air springs can be adjusted based on the weight you have loaded into the truck (or the tongue weight from a trailer) you can be sure your ride experience won't change whether the bed is loaded and you're pulling a trailer or the bed is completely empty and you're just going on a Sunday drive. Timbren springs provide great support under load but they might cause a bit of a rougher ride with the truck empty.

If you plan on having a semi-constant load either in the bed of the truck or if you tow often, the Timbren # TFR1504E is a good choice. They also don't require any maintenance or adjustments after the initial install.

If your load is always going to be changing or you don't really load up the truck too much then the Firestone # F2582 will be the better choice.

I have have attached some video demonstrations on both systems that you can take a look at.
