If you don't already have a wiring connector on your 2012 Chevy Traverse then that means you don't have the tow package and you need to install a 4-Way wiring harness and an adapter for a 7-Way. I am not sure what factory plug you found but when I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha he said that there was a change from the 2012 to 2013 Traverse models which is why the wiring kit # 118271 won't fit the 2012 model. If you send me a pic of the connector that you found I can try to help you identify what it is for.

The 4-Way connector I recommend installing is the Tekonsha T-One # 118450 as we have found the Tekonsha wiring to be the most reliable. Attached is an installation video on a 2012 Traverse showing how to make your connections behind the tail lights.

Once the T-One is installed the next step is to installed the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This connects to the 4-Way and then requires some wiring to be run to the battery and inside your cab for a fully functioning 7-Way. I have attached an installation video of this kit on a 2012 Traverse for you to reference as well.

In the attached video you see the Voyager brake controller # 39510 being installed with the adapter # 3026-P. If you like this setup then I highly recommend going this route but swapping out the brake controller to the Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is an upgraded version of the Voyager that is easier to use. I have attached a review video for you to check out.
