How is a Weight Distribution System Used with the Brophy Hitch Extender # ST18

Question:

I am familiar with typical weight distribution systems and sway bars. Just curious exactly how a weight distribution system works with the extender. I assume that the ball/shank that tie into the bars fit into the receiver extension, just want to confirm. For what its worth, I am looking to tow a trailer behind a 2011 2500HD with a max GTW of 13,000 lbs. with 9 ft. slide in camper.

The Brophy Hitch Extender with Step # ST18 that you referenced really just moves the location of your receiver back 18". You install your Weight Distribution (WD) system the same exact way, it will just sit further back from your vehicle.

This extender is rated for 3,500 lbs Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) and 350 lbs Tongue Weight (TW). When used with a WD system those capacities are increased to 7,000 lbs GTW and 700 lbs TW.

Please note that the limiting factor in this setup is your trailer hitch (or vehicle depending on which is lower). The adapter will reduce the overall weight capacity of your trailer hitch/vehicle by 35% and you will be limited by that as opposed to the 7,000 lb GTW and 700 lb TW. In your case, your GTW will reduce from 13,000 pounds to 8,666 lbs, but you will still be limited to the lowest capacity of 7,000 lb GTW and 700 lbs.
