Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2013 Chevy Traverse Towing 2018 Heartland Pioneer SO185

Question:

Recommended WDS & Sway Control. I own a 2013 Chevy Traverse LT with a max towing capacity of 5,200lbs. I recently purchased a 2018 Heartland Pioneer SO185. I would like to know what the best equipment would be to improve my towing experience. I have done some research on several brands/models and would like to know a few different options based on pricing. Thank you in advance.

There are a couple of different options for a weight distribution system which I'll go over but first it is important to know how to find the best system for you. To determine this you will need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go Heartland Pioneer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2013 Chevy Traverse.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the etrailer # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your Traverse and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

Based on your 2018 Heartland Pioneer's 4,800 lb GVWR we can estimate that your total tongue weight, depending on the amount of cargo you have behind your Traverse's rear axle, will be in the 700 lb range. If that is the case, I recommend the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET weight distribution system, which is for total tongue weights between 600 lbs and 1,000 lbs. It uses 4-point sway control created by friction in the spring bars as well as the L-brackets which prevents sway. This system comes with everything you need for installation though it is recommended you use thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 for installation of the hitch ball.

For a more economical option you can take a look at the Fastway e2 # FA92-00-0800 which has a tongue weight capacity of between 400 lbs and 800 lbs. It only has 2 points of sway control instead of the 4 that the Equal-i-zer has so instead of preventing sway it reduces it. The Fastway will also require 2" hitch ball # EQ91-00-6080 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 63840; it is also recommended with this system you use thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 for installation of the hitch ball.

I've added links to video reviews of these systems for you to take a look at as well as a link to our selection of weight distribution systems for you to check out.
