Increasing Wheel and Tire Size to Increase Trailer Ground Clearance

Question:

I have a 2002 sure-trac 4X8 utility trailer with a GVWR of 2000 LBS. Currently it has 5.7 x 8 LRC tires on it. I would like to put new tires on it to give me more ground clearance. Would a 5.3 x 12 work? I realize I might have to move or replace the fenders.

Expert Reply:

By going with the 5.3x12 tire, you will gain 1/4 inch in width and 3.8 inches in diameter which would gain you approximately 2 inches of additional ground clearance.

Other than having to move or modify your existing fenders, going with the larger tire size will work just fine for you.
