How to Increase Trailer Ground Clearance Using an Axle Over-Under Kit
Question:
Im looking into trying to add larger tires to a trailer I just inherited from my grandfather Im looking to add something larger to the trailer to add some more ground clearance. I, wondering if there is any way I can raise the trailer up with suspension or what larger tires I would be able to add. I have some 185/75r/14s. I have 4inch clearance to the fender and an inch on the inside. I know goi larger width wise wont be much help but maybe something taller ? Any ideas or suggestions on how to get something larger under there would be great thank you

Ways to raise the height of a trailer for better ground clearance include using larger wheels/tires and installing an axle over-under kit that reverses the placement of the springs and axle.
An axle over-under kit (we offer two) will give you a height gain equal to the axle diameter plus the height of the leaf spring stack. We have a kit for 3-inch axles, part # K71-385-00, and one for 2-3/8-inch axles, part # K71-384-00. This is the most cost-effective solution.
Installing larger diameter wheels and tires is fine so long as you have the necessary clearance around the tire to allow for normal suspension travel (at least 3 or 4 inches above the tire).
Taller leaf spring hangers will also raise the trailer deck but will not change your ground clearance.
