Hayes/Alko Brake Shoe Compatibility for 12 Inch Brake Assemblies

Question:

I have a 2008 34 ft.montana 5th wheel trailer and need new brake linings. My RV shop wants to sell me Redline BP04-185 shoes. will they fit my trailer? It says on the box it fits hayes/alko 6-7K. Also what is the difference between BP04-185 linings and BP04-165 linings?

Expert Reply:

The Replacement Brake Shoe and Lining for Hayes 12" x 2" Electric Brakes (One Wheel) # BP04-185 and the 12" X 2" Electric Trailer Brake Shoe / Lining (One Wheel) # AKBRKR-S-12 which is the same as the BP04-165 you mentioned will not fit the same assemblies. The Hayes/Alko assemblies had a different pattern that was unique and not compatible with other shoes. Those Hayes brake mount flange and brake assemblies had a unique 4 bolt flange versus the industry standard 5 bolt for 12 inch assemblies. Dexter bought them out so there will be no future assemblies like that, but the parts are still available and more expensive in general. You may or may not have a Hayes assembly and the bolt pattern of the brake flange on the back of your axle is the tell tale.

The 12" X 2" Electric Trailer Brake Shoe / Lining (One Wheel) # AKBRKR-S-12 will fit about 98% of 12 inch brake assemblies, where the Replacement Brake Shoe and Lining for Hayes 12" x 2" Electric Brakes (One Wheel) # BP04-185 will only fit the Hayes/ALKO Assemblies.
