Weight Distribution Recommendation For a Casita Travel Trailer Weighing 2,300 Pounds
Question:
I have a 5.3 v8 gmc truck It weighs 5000 lb. my trailer is a 2,300lb. dry weight casita travel trailer. I would like to purchase a sway control, but I am not comfortable connecting the weight distribution unit.I have been towing the trailer only with the basic connection-2inch ball with brake away wire and safety chains. will I be safe using only the sway control?

Since your trailer, when loaded will be near or over half of your towing vehicles weight, you would benefit from a weight distribution system. A weight distribution system can also help reduce trailer sway in addition to reducing vehicle sag. Another way to help reduce trailer sway is by proper loading of your trailer, with heavier items near the front of the trailer.
Using just a sway control system will help with reducing trailer sway, but using a weight distribution system will provide the greatest safety.
You could simply go with just a weight distribution system, or one with a built-in sway control system. A good option would be a weight distribution system with built-in, dual-cam sway control. Dual-cam sway control acts to prevent trailer sway before it starts. When choosing a weight distribution system, you want to choose a system that is close to the tongue weight of your trailer when loaded. Tongue weight is about 10 to 15 percent of your loaded trailer weight.
A good option for your towing setup would be the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # RP66086, which features dual-cam sway control and is rated for up to 600 lbs of tongue weight.
I have linked and FAQ on weight distribution that you may find as a good reference.
