Weight Distribution/Sway Control Recommendation for 13 ft Casita Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 13 foot Casita pulled by a Subaru Outback. Although there is a friction anti sway bar attached there is still a sway problem. Will a weight distribution hitch reduce the sway? Will I still need the anti sway bar?

A weight distribution hitch in and of itself won't have much influence on sway. If the bar you're currently using isn't doing the trick, there are some things you can check. Make sure that the the trailer is being towed so that it's within at least two inches of level. You might not be able to get things perfectly level, but get as close as you can. Have your suspension inspected, making sure nothing is excessively worn or broken. Make sure that your axle isn't bent. If your tires are wearing unevenly, it's a sure sign that there's a suspension or an axle problem of some sort. This isn't always easy to do with a camper, but if possible add some weight to the front of the trailer. If the water tank is at the front and you've been waiting to fill up until you get to the campground, try adding some water to the tank. If the trailer doesn't have enough tongue weight, it will sway.

If all this checks out, adding a basic weight distribution system like the # PS49583 to your current friction sway bar isn't going to do much to further combat the trailer sway, if the friction sway bar isn't helping now. It will prevent some sagging at the rear of your Outback which could help some, but I'd recommend getting a weight distribution system with a better preforming sway control component than a friction bar.

Given the fact that your trailer probably has a GVWR (the maximum allowable weight which = dry weight plus cargo) of less than 2500 lbs, the tongue weight would be between 250 and 350 lbs. Given that, I'd recommend the Fastway e2 weight distribution/sway control system, part # FA92-00-0600. This system will reign in your trailer sway and will help reduce any sag that your Outback might be experiencing when the trailer is hitched up. You'll also need a 2 inch trailer ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank. I'd recommend part # A-90.
