How to Determine Tongue Weight Capacity When Using a Dual Hitch Extender on a 2016 Acura MDX
Question:
We have a 2016 Acura MDX with a maximum tongue weight of 350 pounds. We are towing a tear with a tongue weight of 160 pounds and are also towing bikes weighing 100 pounds. With the dual receiver, do we have a total maximum tongue weight of 175 50 or do we have 175 for bottom and 175 for top receiver? We bought bike rack from e-Trailer and are trying to determine if we are exceeding our tongue weight. Thanks

What you will need to do is compare look at the Tongue Weight (TW) of the trailer hitch receiver that is installed on your 2016 Acura MDX. Using a Dual Hitch Extender, like the Malone # MPG544 will reduce the TW capacity of your hitch receiver by 50%. The TW rating for the Malone # MPG544 is 400 lbs which is a combination of both receivers. You will need to go by whichever capacity is lower.
As an example; if you were to install the etrailer # e98840 hitch receiver (900 lbs TW) on your MDX, and then you were to use the Malone Dual Hitch Extender, even though 50% of your 900 lbs TW would be 450 lbs, since the dual hitch extender is rated for 400 lbs TW that is your limiting factor and that is what you must go by.
