How Is Weight Capacity Calculated When Using An Extender

Question:

Ok, so I dont understand. The hitch says it has a 4000 lb towing capacity and a 400 lb tongue capacity. But, then you put in the note: Note: Only the bottom receiver of this extension can be used for towing. Using this extension will reduce your hitchs weight capacity by 50 percent. So, is it really only 2000 lb towing capacity? And only a 200 lb tongue capacity if I add a trailer and a bike rack? Or, is this one really a 400/4000? Im confused, please clarify for me. I would like to get one but I just dont understand. My trailer has a 200 lb tongue weight and is 2600 lbs. So, again my question: is it really a 400/4000 or a 200/2000?

The weight capacity of the Malone Dual Hitch Extender, part # MPG544, is 4000 lbs and 400 lbs for tongue weight. Using this extender reduces the towing weight capacity of the hitch on your vehicle by 50 percent.

If the hitch that is installed on your vehicle is rated for 6000 lbs towing weight and tongue weight of 600 lbs, then using this extender will reduce the hitch towing weight capacity to 3000 lbs, and the tongue weight capacity to 300 lbs.

Because of the design of this extender, the bottom of the hitch is the only one that can be used for towing a trailer. The upper receiver can be used for a bike carrier as you mentioned. The capacity of the extender does not get reduced when you are using it. Only the hitch installed on the vehicle has the weight capacity reduced.
