Dual Hitch Adapter For Flat Towing And Carrying A Bike Rack

Question:

Using this behind my diesel pusher in which I flat tow my GMC 1500 with a blue ox set up. I want to add this so I can add a bike rack as I see many others do. All of my blue ox equipment is 10k lbs rated this extension is rated at 4000lbs. I understand there really isn’t any tongue weight but is this adequate for my 8k lbs vehicle behind me?

Hello Steve. I do have a good solution for you, but I cannot recommend using the Malone Adapter # MPG544. Since it is rated for towing only 4,000 lbs, your 8,000 lb towed vehicle would be double the max towing capacity. You are right about there being very little tongue weight when flat towing, but I still cannot recommend using it.

Instead, I suggest you use the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM-077-6. This is a dual hitch adapter that is essentially designed specifically for this purpose. It is rated for towing up to 10,000 lbs, just like all of your other flat tow components. It has a 400 lb tongue weight capacity which will be plenty for your bike rack. This particular model has a 6" rise/drop. It is also available in the following sizes:

2-1/4" Rise/Drop # RM-077-2

8" Drop/Rise # RM-077-8

10" Drop/Rise # RM-077-10

@JesseM is there one that is even with the shaft and then has a rise? I do not want to lower my tow bar height any.

@SteveC That makes perfect sense Steve. In this case the Roadmaster adapters will not work for you since all of them will have a receiver below the shaft. I do have something that I think you will be interested in though. Take a look at the following: Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers # 325-GH-314 This is a 10K rated ball mount that features 4 stacked 2" receivers. When used in the rise position the lowermost receiver is even with the shaft. So you can put your tow bar in the lowermost receiver, and your bike rack in the uppermost. We have had many of our customer successfully use this Gen-Y ball mount for this purpose, so it comes highly recommended. Rated for up to 1,500 lbs of tongue weight.
