For your 2010 VW GTI, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11000. This is a system rated for 2000 lbs max and 200 lbs tongue weight max, so you will want to make sure your trailer doesn't exceed that and that your towing capacity in your owners manual allows for that. The manufacturer specs trump the hitch ratings, so you will go off that capacity if it is less than the hitch is rated for.
For a ball mount, I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 9-3/8" Long - 3,500 lbs # C45016 along with a 2 inch hitch ball like # A-82 or a 1-7/8 inch ball like # A-80.
For your trailer wiring, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236 which will protect your factory wiring from overdraw by drawing power directly from your battery. I've attached an article to assist with the routing of the wire.
