It's sounds to me like you may have the wrong wire attached to the stop light switch circuit on your vehicle. The red wire coming from the back on the connector on the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 will need to be attached to the wire running to the brake pedal that only has power while the brake pedal is depressed, not all the time.
In order to find the correct wire, you will need to use a circuit tester like part # ALL640595. Once you have a circuit tester, you will need to test each of the wires coming from the brake controller and attach the red wire coming from the controller to the wire that only has power while the brake pedal is depressed.
If you have a proportional brake controller, keep in mind that the brake controller will not send power to the trailer brakes using the brake pedal unless you are moving as they are designed to mimic the braking force from the vehicle while at speed.
I have attached a brake controller help article to help walk you through this process.
