Methods to Increase Ground Clearance for 2001 Jayco Heritage Manistee Single Axle Pop-Up Camper

Question:

I have a 2001 Jayco Heritage Manistee pop-up camper. Current size wheels are 13 inch. The only problem I have with this camper is ground clearance. How much bigger can I go in tire and/or wheel size to gain a little more clearance?

Increasing the tire diameter on your 2001 Jayco Heritage Manistee pop-up camper trailer is one way to gain ground clearance but care should be taken to ensure you retain sufficient clearance above the tread surface to allow for normal suspension travel. We recommend no less than 3-inches minimum between the top of the tire tread and the nearest part of the trailer above it. The photos of your trailer I reviewed did not allow me to determine if there is enough space for larger tires.

Another option to gain ground clearance is to install an axle over-under kit, sometimes also called an axle flip. What these kits do is move your leaf spring stock to the top of the axle. This gives you a height gain equal to the height of the spring stack plus the axle diameter.

We have kit # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8-inch diameter axles and kit # K71-385-00 for 3-inch axles. The linked video explains the kit components. This option costs substantially less than new wheels and tires.
