Recommended Tires And Wheels As Well As Over-Under Kit For Utility Trailer

Question:

Can I get a 225/15 load range e mounted to a silver mod 5 on 4 1/2? My travel trailer has to go down 10 miles of dirt road, washboard and rutted. The 14inch tires it came with are a problem, plan is to flip the axels and go with the 10 ply not for load capacity but durability. Thoughts? Our utility trailer has 10 ply e and even loaded very heavy has neve had a flat or problem on the same road. Btw 14s were new on unit 1.5 years ago and trailer is now going out of warranty hence the upgrade. Thanks

For your desired 225/15 load range e tires on silver mod 5 on 4-1/2, you will need to purchase the tires and wheels separately and have them mounted at a local tire shop. For this tire, I recommend the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL304 because of its warranty. This tire has a 5 year warranty and comes with 2 years of roadside assistance should anything happen. No other company offers that. This tire is made extremely well and that is part of the reason they can offer that warranty. For your wheels, I recommend the Lionshead Steel Modular Trailer Wheel - 15" x 5" - 5 on 4-1/2 - Silver # LHHA315. This combination will be slightly more durable on the side wall due to the 10 ply rating versus 8 ply of load range D, but the tread portion will be similar.

If you want wheels already combined, you will need to drop to that D load range. If you do that you will still get a really nice tire already mounted in the Provider ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # A225R645WM. This is the route I would go based on what you said, but there is a little more peace of mind with the higher capacity tire and warranty.

To flip your axles, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 if you have 2-2/3 inch axles or the # K71-385-00 if you have 3 inch axles. I've attached a photo to help.
