Recommended Curt Weight Distribution System for a 7,000 lb Trailer

Question:

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 Crew Cab pickup. I want to purchase a Curt weight distribution hitch with sway bar. I pull a 14 ft. Haulmark tandem axle trailer. It is rated at 7000 lbs. I was considering purchasing Model # 17322 hitch assembly. I prefer the square distribution bars vs. the round bars for more ground clearance. Comments and feedback please. Thank you.

Just a few things to note about Weight Distribution (WD) systems. You will want to make sure that you pick a system that has a weight range that your Total Tongue Weight (TTW) falls in the middle of. Total Tongue Weight is the Tongue Weight (TW) of your loaded and ready-to-go trailer, plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2014 GMC Sierra. Once you know what your TTW is, then you can make sure to pick out an appropriate WD system.

Also, the TW of any trailer should be between 10 percent to 15 percent of your Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). If your loaded and ready-to-go trailer's GTW is 7,000 lbs, this puts your TW between 700 lbs and 1,050 lbs.

If the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # C17322 that you mentioned has the appropriate weight range, then it will work well for your application. The only negative thing about it is that since it uses the friction sway control bar, you will have to disconnect this when you back up.

A similar bolt-on Curt WD system would be the TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # C17500. This has integrated sway control so you will be able to back up without have to disconnect any sway control bar. It also has the 10,000 lbs GTW and 1,000 lbs TW max ratings that part # C17322 has.

If your TTW is over 1,000 lbs, just let me know what your TTW is and I would be happy to help you find a similar system with the appropriate weight rating.
