Recommended Trailer Hitch And Platform Bike Carrier for 2017 Toyota Prius Prime

Question:

Need to carry two carbon fiber frame mtn bikes w 27.5inch wheels, each bike 30 lbs, on my 2017 Prius Prime. Would the Curt hitch with Kuat Transfer work? Would I need an extender? Other options? The Prime is super low to the ground .... Thanks!

We offer one trailer hitch for your 2017 Prius Prime. It is the Curt # C11473. This is a Class l trailer hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Per a note from Curt all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.

The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the rear bumper is 7-inches so you want to choose a bike carrier that will clear the vehicle.

The Kuat Transfer, part # KU74FR measures 6-inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier when folded up, so that would not be a great carrier for your Prius.

You may want to check out the Kuat NV 2.0 Base, part # BA12B. When folded up this bike carrier measures 7-7/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike carrier and 10-1/2 inches when folded down. The carrier works with wheel diameters between 20 and 29 inches and can handle tires up to 4.8 inches wide. The carrier also has a shank rise of 3-1/2 inches for better ground clearance. Another nice feature is the hitch lock and retractable cables locks to deter theft of the bikes and carrier.
