Recommended Brake Assemblies And Drums For 1990 Shorline Roller Trailer

Question:

I have a 1990 SerRay 160 on a roller trailer. I am going to be towing it with a 2014 Toyota 4-Runner and am thinking I need to add brakes to the trailer. It is a Shoreline roller trailer of the same vintage. it has flanges for brakes to be mounted. What kit do you suggest. Can I put electric brakes on it?

If you would like to add brakes to your Shoreline roller trailer, I recommend using the Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 7" - Left Hand - 2,000 lbs, # AKEBRK-2L and the right side # AKEBRK-2R. Electric brakes will work fine on a boat trailer, we just recommend using dielectric grease # 11755 in your connections to keep moisture out. You will also want the Brake Mounting Hardware Kit for 7" and 10" Brake Assemblies # BIK-00.

For your hub and drum assemblies, I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2,000-lb Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 Bearings, # AKHD-545-2-2K. To ensure this is the correct assembly, I recommend pulling your idler hub off one side of your trailer axle and checking the bearing numbers on the bearing to the outside of the trailer as well as the number on the inside bearing of that same hub. The numbers are normally printed right on the outside face of the bearing. If you bearing numbers aren't what I assume, let me know the numbers and I'll make sure you get the correct parts for your trailer.

For wiring, I recommend getting a 7 way molded connector like # 277-000143. You will want to run # 10-2-1 wire to your trailer brakes which is sold by the foot.

If you need to add a brake controller and 7 way connector to your 2014 Toyota 4 Runner, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way Trailer Connector # HM11141855 and the Tekonhsa Prodigy P3 # 90195 with the wiring harness # 3014-P.
