Where to Find Plug for Installing Trailer Wiring on a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
2016 Subaru Outback Premium with 4 cyl engine, to attach the trailer wiring harness. Attempts to discover trailer hitch wiring plug has been unsuccessful. I found a loop of wire behind the panel at the spot the plug is instructed to be located, however every effort to 1 pull the wire out from panel 2 extract or feel any plug type connector has failed. Ive pulled at the loop with a hook with force, removed the blue tape which was wrapped around the loop tried every possible attempt to feel for the plug, just short of breaking my fingers. Are you certain there is a plug there on all Outbacks, and how does it become extracted from behind the panel?

To see exactly where the port is for the install of the Tow Ready Harness part # 118467 check out the install video I attached. It sounds like you have found the correct area by your mention of the blue wire that should be holding the harness to the body of the vehicle.
We have heard from customers with similar Outbacks that this harness is still hard to find even with the videos and install instructions as guides.
We had one customer say they had to use a mirror and flashlight to help locate it. The theme from our customers is that it took a while to find but eventually they did find it. If you can remove more of the interior panels that would help as well.
I spoke to one of our installers and he informed me that on the Outback we had in our shop that the plug could easily have been overlooked, as it was taped to another bundle of wires under the panel. If you look at the video I've linked at the 2:00 minute mark, you will see Randy push the connector back under that panel, he told me he had to reach around under there to find the plug before they begun the video.
I found another source that mentioned that the plug will not only be tucked up behind the driver side inner fender trim but it should be visible near the rubber grommet in the floor and the cargo anchor. I have attached an image of this location to the page for you to better see. Very similar area pointed out in your # 118467 instructions.
