Seal in L44649 Bearing Kit is Too Small to Fit Trailer Hub

Question:

Experts, The bearing on my trailer were L44549, I recently bought an L44649 kit to replace them and found the bearings and racers themselves all fit but the rubber ring at the back seemed to recess deeper than that of the original. The original sat flush with the rim of the hub whereas this one recessed about a 1/4. The result after putting everything together is that when I went to pump it full of grease, rather than filling the hub cavity it spews out around that rear rubber ring and ends up as a glob on the driveway. Has anyone experienced this? My next step is to recover the original rubber ring and swap it back in.

It sounds like you are talking about the grease seal. Once installed the grease seal should fit flush like your old one. The fact that it is not and that grease is leaking out means that the seal is not the correct size for the hub.

What is the diameter of the hub bore where the grease seal fits into the hub? This measurement has to be as accurate as possible so I recommend using calipers such as # PTW80157. If the measurement ends up being at or close to 2.332 inches then you likely need seal # SL150.

You will most likely not be able to reuse the old seals because 99 percent of the time they end up damaged when they get removed.
