Video Transcript for Performance Tool Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper Review

Today we'll be looking at the Performance Tool four inch carbon fiber digital caliper. Part number PTW80157. This allows you to read from 0 to 4 inches or 0 to 100 millimeters. It moves in 100ths of an inch or 1/10ths of a millimeter. It has a nice LED screen. You hit the on button and it's easy to read.

You can switch between millimeters and inches. Right now it's in inches and now it's in millimeters. Just by the touch of a button. We also have our zero capability so when we move it down our measurement tool, if we want to measure something and see the difference between another measurement, we can hit the zero button and it shows us the difference. This is a negative distance or a positive distance.

Take it back to zero and hit the zero button again so we can start back from zero inches or zero millimeters. This allows us to measure the outside diameter or the inside dimensions with the other side. Now we can show you in action. On our trailer here, we pulled off our seal. Usually it's stamped with the measurements on it, but this one has worn off over time. WE can use our tool to find the inner dimension of our race.

2.18 inches. If we need to figure out the outside diameter, that'll be 3.35 inches. Other measurements that we might need to know. Come to our shaft. We've got the bearings that sit on our shaft so we might need to know the diameter of our shaft.

We can come up, be 1.24 inches and that'll be for our inner or our outside bearing. If we need to figure out our other, the larger bearing, the inside bearing, we do the same thing. 1.74 inches. Now if we need to know the difference between the two, we come up we get the inside bearing, we hit our zero button, that zeros it out, and we can come to our outside bearing and we see there's almost a half inch difference between the two bearing sizes. Same works if you want to figure out the dimensions here for our race because that's where it sits. This is where our race sits. If I want to do difference in that. I'll take our meter, I'll measure the inside diameter of our race, I'll hit the zero button, and then I can come and measure the outside distance of our race and see if there's any difference at all. Which, there's not, but if there was it would show us. There would be a negative difference or if I measure something bigger, it would show us a positive difference. That's it for a look at the Performance Tool 4 inch carbon fiber digital caliper. Part number PTW80157.Speaker 2: You can find this and everything else right here at etrailer.com What's up man.

Good product

by:

It works great and it's just plain fun. I bought it to measure bearing buddies and spindles. It works for that but it also has been great for measuring the diameter of carbon fiber tubes I'm using to build a sailboat mast and spars.

It gives instant metric to inch conversions - just push the in/mm button and the measurement in the display converts.

I've used it at least a couple of hundred times and it's still on the original battery.

Pro tip: Close it all the way before you turn it on.

I have always wanted a digital caliper now I have one. I have always relied on my older read out types since this is the one etrailer uses I will be able to take the same measurements they do . My local bearing supplier has priced themselves out of the market so I use etrailer !

  • How Can I Find Out What Bearings, Races And Seals Will Work With A 4-71744 Hub
Well my friend I am going to need more information from you. Verify the weight capacity of your spindle and axle. Pull off your hub and take out the seals and bearings. I need the part numbers stamped on the bearings and seals. You can see where the part numbers will be on each item in the photo. If you can't find them I'll need measurements on everything and the linked photo will show you where to measure from. **4" Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper # PTW80157. I highly recommend using...

  • Bearing Protectors for Zieman F-714 Trailer
You'll either need to clean and repack your bearings by hand or use a Bearing Buddy bearing protector, which is available for many different hub bore sizes. If you'd care to reply with either the reference number from your outer wheel bearing or the inside dimension of the hub bore where the grease cap sits, I'd be happy to see if we offer a compatible Bearing Buddy. The # BB1980A-SS Bearing Buddy you'd looked at fits a 1.980 inch diameter hub bore that uses a L44643 or L44649 outer wheel...

  • Replacement Wheel Bearing Kit for 3500 lb Trailer Axle
In addition to the bearings and races, you'll need to replace the grease seal as well because it'll get destroyed when removing it which is necessary to access the inner bearing. A 2-3/8 inch diameter axle tube is usually a 3500 lb axle, which usually uses a L68149 inner and a L44649 outer wheel bearing. You'll want to confirm this by checking the reference numbers from the existing bearings. A 3.5K axle will also use a 10-19 grease seal (a/k/a a 58846 or 171255TB, depending on the manufacturer)....

We don't have the specs for your specific trailer's wheel pilot hole. There are two common sizes for the just over 3 inch caps. We have the 3.19 inch option like # 319EZ and the 3.33 inch option like # AM90195. The best way to know which you need is to use a digital caliper like # PTW80157.

I am happy to help you figure out which dust cap you need for the Haul Master utility trailer model 90154 however, I was not able to find any information about the wheels on your utility trailer. To get the correct sized dust cap you can simply measure the inner pilot hole diameter of your wheel (where the cap goes). You may find it helpful to use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 to get the measurement as accurate as possible. For example: the diameter of the grease cap part # RG04-020...

I can absolutely help you locate the parts you're looking for, but you will need to pull the hubs off if you can't locate any identifying information like a serial number on the axle. For axles in the 1,000 - 2,000 pound capacity, there are two common bearing combinations. Depending on the spindle that was used, your hubs and axle could require two # L44643 bearings or two # L44649 bearings. There is only about 1/16 of an inch difference in the spindle diameter that these two bearings...

We do not have a manual with the trailer axles listed. There can be so many variations for trailers it would require volumes to hold that much information. I am afraid you will have to remove your hub and either find the numbers for the bearings, race, and seals, or use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 and measure your spindle in the locations noted in the attached photo and the inside diameter of your hub. There are a few options but the Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Tire w 17-1/2" Lynx Aluminum Wheel # LHAS701 will not fit the 5/8" studs on your trailer. You can change your hubs to ones with a 9/16" studs to use these wheels. Since our 2,700 lb hubs use Double Lip Grease Seal - ID 1.249" / OD 1.983" # 34823, this is likely what you need. The best way to know for sure though would be to wipe off the grease and try to match up numbers on the seal. If you can't read the number, you'll need to use a caliper # PTW80157 to measure the diameter of the spindle and also the inner bore of the hub and use these numbers as your new seal's I.D. and O.D. I'm not quite sure this is what you're looking for so you'd want to measure your hub bore using a digital calipers like the # PTW80157 to make sure that you're getting the right ones.
