Video Transcript for Hopkins Multi-Tow Trailer Connector Installation - 2022 Chevrolet Colorado

Hi there Chevy owners. Today nears 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. We're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install Hopkins custom fit vehicle wiring harness. And this is what our harness looks like when it's installed. You can see this is gonna pop right in to the factory location where your factory connector would be. So this is a great option for installing one on a vehicle that doesn't have it cause it'll hook to the blunt cut wires located below.

Or if you happen to damage your connector here while working, maybe something slammed into your factory one. You can also use this harness as a replacement harness to get that fixed on that vehicle as well. It's gonna be exactly like the factory one on top. You'll have your seven way connector. It's gonna be a spring loaded latch on there that has a seal on the inside to keep out dirt, debris, and moisture.

And on bottom we've got a four pole connector so you can hook up to just about any trailer. And this one also is spring loaded with seals as well. We'll begin our insulation here at the back of the vehicle on the driver's side just here on the side of the frame rail. You'll find all of your blunt cut wiring for hooking up your connector here at the back. It is gonna be wrapped in electrical tape.

I went ahead and already pulled that tape off of here and then I went and just kind of pushed all the wires apart so we can make our connections. We're gonna go ahead and start with our power wire. Just get that one out of the way. That's gonna be the orange one. This is gonna be live so you don't want to touch that against any metal surface.

It's not gonna be able to shock you but if you touch this against anything metal after you strip it off, it will make a little spark show for you and you don't want that to happen. That's gonna hook to the red wire here on the harness that we've got. So I'm gonna go ahead and have this side strip back and ready. Then we're gonna grab our cutters. You can just strip it back right on the piece here but we don't want all that wire exposed so we're gonna cut some of this off first. I'm gonna basically cut it with just a hair of it left on there, something like this and then we'll use our strippers now to strip that back. And be careful too with your strippers. These are metal too, so if your strippers are touching the wire and they touch something metal you will also have a little light show. So we're gonna come up in here now and strip this back. Now that's our live wire. So now we're gonna think about connector and this actually isn't the ones that come in your kit. You can just get regular butt connectors in your kit and I would recommend not using any of those because they will not seal up. So moisture's gonna be able to get down on 'em which can cause corrosion and can lead to premature failure. So if you want a long lasting connection here on your connector without that's not gonna give you issues down the road. I'd recommend upgrading to these heat shrink butt connectors. We do sell these here at etrailer so you can get those to seal up your wiring. We're gonna slide our butt connector on and crimp it onto the wire. We can then grab our other end here. We already stripped back the red cause that is gonna be the power wire for our connector side. So we'll get our crimpers in place there slide our red wire in and then make our connection. All right, so we've got that one connected. At this point we're gonna do the same thing for each of our wires and making sure that we hook up each one to the correct circuit there. So I'm gonna go ahead and get 'em all connected and then we'll just show you which color from your harness will connect to which color here on the vehicle. All right, so we've made the rest of our connections here. So the first one we did was our orange to red. That's our power circuit. Next, the white wire that comes with the harness here actually has a ring terminal on it for connecting it to ground. We actually just cut that off and I just kind of slid it into the harness and re taped it up and then connected it to the black wire. That's the ground circuit on the vehicle. We've got our brown circuit which is our taillight circuit that just goes brown to brown green which is right turn that just goes green to green. You've got blue, which is your brake controller output that's just blue to blue. And we've got our yellow circuit which is our left turn, that's just yellow to yellow. And last we have our reverse light circuit which is gonna be purple on the new harness to gray on the vehicle. Once we've got all those connections made we're gonna grab our heat gun now and shrink 'em all down. With everything wired over here we can now install our connector. Now there's typically gonna be a just a plastic cover there. Our customer had already removed it. To remove it there are a couple of little prongs just like this on the inside. So you can just give those a squeeze and push that thing out. So now we'll take our new one. You'll want the connector towards the top. That'll just press into place. You'll hear it click in. Before we plug our connector into the back side of it, we're gonna put some dielectric grease on it. That'll just help keep moisture from getting in there and causing corrosion. Just give a nice little thorough coat there. Line up your connector and plug it in. And now at this point we can plug in our tester and make sure everything's working. So we plugged in our tester back there. We just gonna run through all of our lights. I did turn the ignition towards the on position and you can see the clearance lights are already lit up. We'll check our turn signals. There's our left turn, our right turn also hit our brakes. We can see those light up. In the top right corner you'll see that the voltage gauge is showing battery voltage as well. So we can see our auxiliary circuits working. I'm gonna have to start the vehicle to put it in reverse to get the reverse lights to work. And now you should see the reverse lights working there. And lastly, you would check your brake controller output but our customer doesn't have a brake controller installed so we won't have a way to test this. But this one should also be working. The rest of yours are working and the likelihood of that working is also gonna be good. And that completes our installation of Hopkins custom fit vehicle wiring harness on our 2022 Chevrolet Colorado..

I had read that the wires were a little short, but once I got everything connected up they were just fine. It was really easy to install and it looks like the factory installed ones. I did un-tape the harness and cut the ground wire to the length of the other wires then I tucked it in the insulation and taped it all up again before I connected it to the trucks wiring harness.

The wiring harness and plug worked really well for install on my 2018 Colorado WT. I did upgrade the butt-connectors for the install, but the instructions were straightforward and went smoothly overall, with everything needed being included.

Chevrolet Colorado

Fit perfect in my 2023 Colorado. The factory original "blank" came right out and all I had to do was plug in my new connector and slide it right back into the factory opening in the bumper. Only tools I needed were my two hands. I have made a few purchases from etrailer and have always been very satisfied.

by:

The wiring harness was great. It was easy to connect, and the instructions were straight forward, and easy to understand.

All was scheduled for tuesday and we got everything saturday. I give you 10 stars not 5. George was awesome keeping us up to date. Will recommend etrailer to everyone

Exactly like the original. Truck came with a empty plug. Easy to wire up and install. You can see it to the left of license plate. Just like factory made.

Still working as it should. Whats not to like about that? Easy to install on my 2019 Colorado WT that didnt come with hitch or trailer wiring. Im 72 yrs. old, so if I can install it. Anyone can!

by:

Works as expected. Used Harbor Freight heat shrink electrical connectors for better install. I think that for the money this kit costs
that it should come with the heat shrink connectors. 2020 Colorado

Wired a 7/4 way to 2017 Colorado...
quick
AND easy!!! The colored wiring diagram was accurate.....
The only problem I had was eventually figuring out the Pollak 12-741EV tester you sold me had to be plugged in with the test light indicators facing downwards. A hand held mirror placed under the plugged in 7 way tester did the trick,
and BTW the 7/4 connector only installs one way:
7 pole round on top and 4 pole flat on the bottom.

by:

Perfect fit and proper wiring diagram!

by:

Very professional, excellent product knowledge, easy to navigate website.

by:

Works great after one year of use. Easy installation if you remember to tie down your rear bumper so it doesn’t fall on your head while working.

by:
2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Ordering was easy, quick and arrived on time. The quality of the product meets today’s standard's.

by:

Pretty easy to install wished the wires were a little longer (or my truck came with a plug in adapter

by:
2022 Ford Flex

Looks like it was factory installed. My truck had a wire for the ground so I tucked the white wire inside the flex tubing with the other wires and cut it to the same length as the others. It ended up being a neat looking installation.

No complaints at all

by:

  • 7-Way/4-Way Kit for 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Similar to Factory Wiring Setup
I looked up the factory hitch and wiring kit for your 2019 Jeep Cherokee and the style of connector is the # HM11141144 which you could install on your vehicle but you'd want to use the 4-way kit part # C56406 as an easy way to get the trailer taillight functions first. This is custom fit for your vehicle and you could cut off the 4-way so that you could wire the harness to the 7-way and you'd be set.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2022 Chevy Colorado
I recommend going with the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98909 for your 2022 Chevy Colorado because it has a matte black finish that blends in better with your truck and will do a better job at hiding any scratches that might happen from flying road debris. If you are planning on doing some towing then you also need wiring and a ball mount to round out your towing setup. For wiring I recommend the Hopkins # HM11141144 which splices into the existing wiring and seats in the bumper,...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a 5.5K Trailer with a 2018 Chevy Colorado
I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2018 Chevy Colorado and it looks like as long as you have the 3.6L V6 (not the ZR2) then you definitely can safely tow up to a 7K trailer. With that being said, there are a few things to note; like how much weight you have in the pickup, if the 5,500 lbs for the trailer is GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) or if that's the dry weight, and that you'll need both a brake controller and a weight distribution system. For your 2019 GMC Canyon I recommend the etrailer class 3 hitch # e98909. This is a 2" receiver rated for towing 8,000 lbs and 800 lbs of tongue weight. A 1969 Shasta Starflyte should be around 2,500 lbs so this will be plenty strong for this purpose. You can also use the Hopkins 7-way harness # HM11141144 for your trailer wiring. It will be a pretty simple no-drill install. I have linked our install video below if you want to take a look.
