Increasing Ground Clearance For Landing Gear On fifth Wheel Trailer
Question:
My husband and I just bought our first fifth wheel, we had a Pullrite Superglide hitch installed in our 2011 Dodge 2500 Diesel . When we picked up the fifth wheel the landing gear is too low to the ground Im worried its going to get damaged if we go over a dip in the road. Should we put a lift kit on the truck or just see if the pin box should be adjusted. Any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated.

When you are pulling your fifth wheel trailer you want the setup to be as level as possible. You did not say if the back of the truck is sagging or if the nose of the trailer is pointing down so the first thing I recommend is making sure everything is installed correctly. We do not recommend using a lift kit on a truck because it will typically cause the towing setup to be uneven and not level.
If the trailer is not level you can see if the pin box can be mounted to create more clearance or you can see if the fifth wheel in the truck bed can have the height adjusted. If you have the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part # C16130 you came from, it has a height adjustment of 4 inches.
I know you have probably already done this but you want to make sure the landing gear is in its highest position when towing.
If you need to add lift to the truck or reduce the sag you may want to check out the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper System, part # F2299. These help reduce sag when towing heavy loads. They will not increase the load-carrying capacity of your truck and are designed to work with vehicles that have a good working suspension.
Another solution some folks use is to use an Over-Under Conversion Kit to add more height to the trailer. For a 3 inch axle with double-eye springs the kit you would need is part # K71-385-00. For a 2-3/8 inch axle the kit is part # K71-384-00.
