Parts Needed To Add Electric Brakes On Motorcycle Trailer

Question:

I have a motorcycle trailer that I want to add electric brakes to. It has a Lippert Components GAWR 3500 lb axle, Cust Part# ST2745, Serial # 045-002648775, Variant # V000113916, Mfg Date 04/16/14, 5 on 4 1/2. Do you have a complete all in one kit that would fit this axle?

When adding brakes to a trailer the first thing you will need is a brake mounting flange on the axle.

If you do not have a brake flange I recommend part # 4-35. This should be welded in place by a professional welder because it needs to be square and concentric.

The brakes I recommend for you are part # AKEBRK-35L-SA. These are self-adjusting 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes and will work with 13, 14, and 15 inch diameter wheels. This is the brake for the left hand(driver side). For a brake that fits on the right hand you need part # AKEBRK-35R-SA.

A great hub that can be used with these brake assemblies is part # AKHD-545-35-K. This hub has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and comes with the bearings, race, grease cap, lug nuts, and seal.

You will also need wiring for your trailer, a break-away kit, and you will need a brake controller for your towing vehicle.

You would use wire # 10-1-1 for electric brake wiring. A 4-way connector on the trailer would not be able to handle the brake circuit. You can use a 7-Way such as # PK12706. Your towing vehicle will also need to have a matching vehicle side connector and a brake controller.

For a break-away kit I recommend part # HM20001.

You will need a brake controller. I recommend the Prodigy P2, part # 90885. Some vehicles are equipped with a brake controller plug. For many of them we do have a plug-in adapter for the brake controller. If you want to let me know what you are towing the motorcycle trailer with I will be glad to see if we have a plug-in adapter available.
