Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2009 Pontiac G6

Question:

Hi, can you tell me once the receiver and hitch are installed on my Pontiac G6, are there any changes that have to be made to the car itself in order to tow it behind my RV, i.e. changes in gearing etc. Also, I already have a receiver, model 3136-1, will this work on the Pontiac G6 or do I have to use the 3165? Thanks.

For your 2009 Pontiac G6 the correct base plate kit is the part # 3165-1 and not the # 3136-1 that you referenced as that base plate is for Saturn Ions.

The final authority on what needs to be done to flat tow your vehicle is the owners manual. Without knowing more info on your vehicle the best I could find for your vehicle is that if it has an automatic or manual it is flat-towable as-is as long as you keep it under 65 mph. You need to verify this though with your owners manual.

In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.

For lighting you can use the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, and not have to worry about cutting and splicing into the vehicle wiring. You will also want the # BX88206 to connect this lighting solution to your tow vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles. You will need the outlet kit part # RM-9332 as well.

Most likely you will also need a high low adapter so that the tow bar will be level when you are flat towing. I attached a link to a page that has all of the ones we carry.

I have included a couple of helpful links to our articles on flat towing for you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for more specific information on flat towing your vehicle. It looks like you would need to pull a fuse to allow your vehicle to be flat towed. To make that easier you would want the part # RM76511.
