Parts to Flat Tow a 1990 Jeep Cherokee One Time

Question:

Hello, Im looking to tow the 1990 Cherokee with my 2018 Toyota 4 Runner. My 4runners towing capacity is 5,000 lbs and my rig is about 3,700 lbs. The Cherokee already has a towing plate so I wont need to get that. I will be towing from Washington to Utah. Id prefer to not get top of the line hardware but I also want it to be reliable and safe. Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks!

I am not sure what base plate kit you already have on your 1990 Jeep Cherokee but if you let me know I can recommend the a tow bar that is cost-effective and compatible. Here is a list of the base plate kits that we have which are a fit for your Jeep along with the most cost-effective tow bar that fits it:

Roadmaster # 1401-1 - Roadmaster Tracker # RM-020
Blue Ox # BX1110 - Blue Ox Adventurer - # BX7322

Since safety cables are required I recommend using the Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643 if you have a Roadmaster or Blue Ox base plate kit.

For a cost-effective light kit use the Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK from Optronics. These can be used for many different applications including trailers.

Most states now require the use of a supplemental braking system. Since it sounds like you will only be towing your Jeep one time it doesn't make sense for you to install a permanent system so the Blue Ox Patriot 3 # BLU37TR is the best option for you. This does pull power from the battery so you may need to install the 12 Volt Outlet Kit # RM-9332 depending on if your owner's manual requires that your battery be disconnected or not.

Typically a flat towing setup will require a high-low adapter for the tow bar to remain level while towing. I have linked our selection of adapters for you to check out as well as an article that will help you determine which is the best one for your application.

I have also attached a few links to some videos and other articles but you will need to check out your owner's manual for any specific instructions for flat towing your Jeep.
