How to Determine if Maintenance is Required on a Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch

Question:

How can i tell if my 16k hitch is in need of maintenance or replacement. I have it installed in my 2002 F250 and Im towing a 35foot Forest River Silverback. Also is it alright to leave the jaws closed when hitching the trailer.

Signs of wear are pretty obvious on a fifth wheel hitch. Basically, you will want to look for excessively loose components such as the jaws, springs or handle. If you have the Reese 16K fifth wheel hitch that you asked this question from, then Reese recommends checking the tightness of all hardware every 1000 miles and to perform the pre-trip test every time you leave for a trip. The pre-trip test is as follows:

1. Lubricate skid plate surface with automotive type chassis grease or use a lube plate like part # RP83002. Use engine oil to lubricate pivot points of moving parts within the hitch.

2. Make sure the jaws open and close freely.

3. Check all pull pins and spring retaining pins before hitching the trailer.

I have attached a link to the owners manual of this hitch for you.

On this hitch, it is alright to leave the jaws closed when hitching the trailer. It is very important to rotate the latch away from the handle. If the latch is not moved, you could bend the latch or damage other components on the hitch.
