What you will want to do is look at the hitches available for the 1996 Chevy K1500 with 10 inch deep drop bumper. These hitches come down lower and could work for you.

Curt hitch # C15317 has the highest capacity of the options at 2,400 pounds tongue weight capacity and 16,000 pounds gross trailer weight capacity. But it measures 7-1/4 inches from the bottom of the frame to the top of the receiver. Check your truck to see if your could get away with 7-1/4 inches. If it will not work then none of the hitches below would work either.

Next would be Draw-Tite hitch # 41528 rated for 600/6,000 pounds.

And last is another Curt hitch, # C13099, rated for 500/5,000 pounds.

If the 7-1/4 measurement just won't cut it then it is possible that Draw-Tite hitch # 41947 could. When used in the lowest position it measures 10-1/4 inches from the bottom of the frame to the top of the receiver. However, for your particular year truck, it would have to be a cab and chassis model, not a regular pick up model, to fit. The cab and chassis models will have a frame width (outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other frame rail) of 34 inches.

If you don't have a cab and chassis model then there is one last option. You could use weld-on truck hitch # 41990-16 which has 16 inch tall brackets. This hitch would need to be welded on by a qualified professional welder.

I assume that you want a hitch that does not require cutting a hole in the roll pan bumper. But I have linked those hitches as well. You would add fold down license plate holder # 8802 and just fold it down when the hitch is needed.
