Video Transcript for FAQ How To Drain And Clean Water Heater

Today we're gonna walk you through, and I'm gonna show you how to drain, clean and descale your hot water heater tank. There's four steps that you're gonna need to take when draining your hot water heater. The first is going to be make sure you shut off all water sources and let your hot water heater cool down. Along with that, you're gonna need to turn off all of the power sources leading to your, or the switches leading to your hot water heater. So there's gonna be usually a switch on the outside on the hot water heater and then a switch on the inside by your control panel. The third thing you're gonna need to do is switch off or switch on your pressure relief valve, which you can normally just pull slowly.

You can see water coming out. Just hold that until water is no longer coming out. You wanna leave it open. And now we're ready to take off the plug at the bottom. So to remove it, usually it's going to be an inch and one 16th socket, but yours may be a little different, so you just have to get the right socket for you.

And then just slowly open it up. We're not gonna have any back pressure on this plug because our pressure release valve is open. Another indication that you need to rinse out your tank is that you can actually see the scaling in the bottom of our bucket here. This is our anode rod. Our anode rod is just about shot which is why you see all this residue coming out of the actual tank itself.

The anode rod is designed to take the brunt force of the actual calcium buildup and the buildup on the inside. It's designed to attack this and not your tank itself. This is definitely gonna be something that we're gonna need to replace. Now with our tank completely emptied out, we want to take a tank rinsing wand. It's just gonna be like a quarter inch thick or a quarter inch of diameter wand and we're gonna stick it up inside the tank itself.

And you'll notice at the end of the tank wand, we have these available on our website, at the end of our tank wand, there's going to be a slight bend in it and that's so that you can actually spin the hose and it'll direct the water in different directions on the inside. So let's stick that in. We did clean our bucket out so we know how much more we are going to actually clean out of this with this. Oh my gosh. There's all kinds of stuff coming out of there. This is just going to an extra cleaning measure that you can do to get some more of that scaling out of the inside. So let the rest of that drain out. And again, you can see there's quite a bit. I think we actually got more this time than we did when we actually took the plug out. Now, when we go to put our vinegar and water solution into our hot water heater, we're gonna go ahead and re insert the old anode rod for the cleaning part because we're gonna have to take it out again, anyway and then we're gonna take the new anode rod, which by the way, this is what they're supposed to look like. We're gonna put the new anode rod in after we've got it all rinsed out for the second time. So we'll just thread our anode rod back in and start filling our tank. So our solution that we have here is going to be four parts vinegar, and two parts water. We've already got our three parts of vinegar in there and we'll go ahead and add our fourth. We'll take this hand pump that we have here at each trailer, stick it on our solution and then connect it to our city water connection. Sure it's getting tight. And then we'll start pumping the solution into the hot water heater. And we did test this out earlier. Soon as we pumped water into the city water connection we started getting water flowing out of the hot water heater. That's how we know what's going in there. Once you have your solution pumped in, you can remove this. You can also use the water pump itself on your camper, the same way that you we're to pump the antifreeze through your system. You just wanna make sure you run that vinegar solution all the way through to your hot water heater. You wanna let this sit overnight and then you'll come back to it the next morning and you'll drain it back out and rinse it real good again. We're gonna go ahead and show you how to do that now but that's just to show you the whole process. Now, if you want to deeper clean, we've seen many different people that will actually turn their water heater on which is going to heat up the water and vinegar solution. We've seen just as good results with just putting the solution in and letting it kind of eat away at all that grime on the inside of the tank. So that's up to you. But then removing it is gonna be the same as draining your tank. You just remove this plug, and just take your anode out. Now you can see here, we have a consistent flow coming out. We turned our water pump back on and it's just going to be pumping fresh water from our fresh water tank, through the hot water heater tank to get that vinegar solution out of there. Now, what you can do, you can put your anode rod back in, fill your tank back up and then drain it all the way down again if you still have that vinegar solution smell in there. You could also reconnect your city water and just run it through that way. Now, once you've done your final drain, you wanna put your anode rod or your plug back in place. Then make sure your pressure relief valve is still open and then turn on your water pump or connect your city water connection. What'll happen is you're filling up your water heater as we speak and then water is going to start coming out of your pressure relief valve. You you'll start to hear some air hissing, but essentially what you're doing is you're filling the tank up, getting the air out, and that's how you know your tank is full is when water comes out of here. So now that we've got water coming out of this here, we can shut that off and we're ready to use our hot water heater again. I hope this video was helpful. Very bad service from start to finish. Please look at photos. I asked about what I needed on your website. I got a reply from Bryce D. He gave me bad information. The packer used a box WAY TOO LARGE for my item and didn't use any kind of padding or packing. The freight company mishandled my package and damaged the original package. In the meantime, my item went from Eastern MO to Georgia to Memphis and then to me. A better freight company could have cut off shipping times by at least a day. So I get my item and called customer service (her extension was 72914) to let y'all know about the misinformation, the damaged package, and try to see if you have what I need. She tells me to call Camco and try to find it and every time I tried to tell her about the packaging and the damage she cut me off. I finally decided it was useless to tell her anything and hung up. Very bad service from start to finish and now I have a damaged item and am out $[XX]. If I could give negative stars on this transaction I would do so.
