Video Transcript for Camco RV Wiring - Power Adapter - CAM55312 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone with the surge protection. This circuit analyzer will plug into a 30 amp receptacle at an RV park to test for improper wiring. Has a 125 volt circuit analyzer which will protect the RV from any improperly wired electrical boxes and power surges. It will protect your RV from power surges up to 2100 Joules. On the very front of the box, right here, it has the diagnostic lights that will indicate faults before you connect your 30 amp electrical cord to your RV. When you plug it in, there'll be a light up here and it will tell you that it's surge protected. Then it'll show you how to read the combination of lights to tell you what circuit is being affected, if any.

If you notice on the handles, they have these nice, sturdy, built-in handles on both ends to make unplugging very easy. Right up here, the 30 amp male end, this is what'll plug into the 30 amp receptacle at the RV park. Down here is the 30 amp female end which will connect to your RV's 30 amp electrical cord. This is a nice weather resistant PVC and polycarbonate which will protect the electrical components. If you notice on each plug-in, it is yellow in color which makes it very easy to see in any low light conditions. A few specs on this.

I want to give you the overall length of the cord from one end to the other. It's going to be right at 22 7/8 inches. The wire gauge that they use in this is 10 gauge wire. That should do it for the review on the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone with the surge protection.

It was a great, easy transaction purchasing from etrailer! The item came in a timely fashion, as told... and the item works like it’s supposed to. Very happy with my purchase, and I’m confident if I had any questions or concerns, a quick call or email will take care of my concern(s). The video review of this dogbone surge protector was very, very helpful in my search for what I needed for my camper. I will buy again, I’m positive!

Product has worked great! I’ve purchased another one for a fellow camper friend, as well!

This appears to be exactly what I was looking for. I have not had a chance to use it on the road yet, but I connected it to our hookup at home, that I wired myself, and was reassured to see all of the correct lights light up. When I hit the road, I will be a first timer, and everything I have read strongly recommends testing circuits prior to hooking up and using surge protection. This device does both.

Unfortunately, we have still not hit the road, so I cannot anything new.

The camco power defender came much earlier then was promised . I placed my order late one evening the next took a phone call from entrailer.com c/s. The nice lady said the power defender was on back order and would be probly two weeks before they received the order and they would ship it out the same day . Sounds reasonable right ! Well here's what happened .... Five days after placing the order a package showed up from etrailer , I assumed it was the rest of the order that was in stock ( 2- tail lights and a vent lid ) but to my surprise it was the full order ! Plus the way it was packaged was nothing less then overkill which is nice to see now days . Maybe 8 lbs of product in a box rated for 100 lbs ! Now the reason that impressed me so much is , im a retired contractor from one of the largest small package companies in the world . Everyday I saw product being shipped in sub par packaging . Even shipped in the box that was ment to be displayed in the store . So to me this is kind of a big deal ! After all those years of my customers asking if I ran their package over with my truck . When it's the shipper that just doesn't care and trying to save a couple bucks this is quit refreshing ! As for the power defender , ask me in about 30 days after my wife I return from our first camp outing of the season . We have been staying in campgrounds we new had good power but now the kids are out we're heading to other places .

by:

The item is much bigger than I imagined. Seems to be heavy duty. I intend to use it during the first week of July at a campground. The most important thing for me is that it will provide information and protect my trailer electronics.

No problems. Just used it for six weeks in a row on a long trip

Hello etrailer. I rate the RV power defender and locking cable we recently purchased at 5 stars each. As a beginner RV owner, I was looking for something that was simple to understand yet confident it would do the job. The Camco 30amp Power Defender was the perfect answer. In fact, my wife and I are currently sitting at our campsite and I’m looking at the unit that shows the surge protection is on and the 30 amp campsite wiring is correct.

by:

Just what I wanted.

by:

Hooked the 30amp dogbone with surge protector up right away, to the outlet I installed outside my house for my new camper. Anytime I hook up my new camper to a 30amp outlet it's going to be good insurance to know that the circuit is wired correctly! Great product... Best Price at etrailer! Excellent service.... thanks etrailer and Karen! I compare prices when it comes to trailer, or RV equipment. Consistently, etrailer has the best prices on the same exact items . Also, most of the time the purchased item arrives much faster then I was told it would take to get to me. (Most of the time I don't pay for delivery.) Thank you! I've been a happy customer for over three years.

by:

Mostly bought this to pretest outlet before plugging in my camper. It has 3 led lights on it that show the condition of the outlet. This part works just like one of those little outlet testers with the 3 lights that we have all seen for standard 20 amp outlets. It also says it has a Surge Suppressor. I can not comment on the operation of this part of the product. (How would you know if it worked?) " It does do a great job of pretesting the outlet and I have found many 30 amp plugs in campgrounds wired with the hot and neutral reversed. Even the 50/30/20 RV box I purchased at Home Depot was wired wrong. It's cheap insurance. I recommend it.

by:

So far I’ve not had a problem with this protector. Comforting to know I’ve got the trailers circuit protected. I have not had an issue with a campgrounds electric hookup so I haven’t seen it indicating a bad circuit. Easy to use and read and has worked well in the rain. We’ve used this at a fox or so campgrounds and several times for about a week. Price was great and would purchase again

by:

Fit my needs perfectly. Great product. Nothing blew out so far. We had a few lightning storms and a couple of close hits. Everything survived. Including a deeply covered, in our little queen size bed, a spastic shivering Golden Retreiver that hates water and storms.

by:

Been trailer camping for 2 years without a surge protector and electric system diagnostic tool. Glad to have one for protection and piece of mind.

by:

Had a surge protector that failed. etrailer replaced with no problems. As always I will come back when I need more items. great to work with.

by:

Another good investment. No more worries with bad wiring or grounding at the pedestal. Also easy to lock around the pedestal for piece of mind so it doesn't walk away.

by:

Very straight forward, simple protection for my TT. Good size for ease of use.
Grab handles are a must.

by:

Great product. This is the second Camco RV Power Analyzer that I have purchased, to give this one to a friend. And, etrailer sells these (and all their products) at a super price. Add that to the great customer service given by etrailer, and you can’t go wrong. Always love getting the things I need at etrailer.com!

by:

So far, I have had no electrical problems from voltage spikes or other electrical abnormalities so in this case, 'no news is good news'.

by:

Calling e- trailer is like calling a friend, curtious , friendly , and aim to please. Haven't used any of the items from my order yet, I will shortly . The order was on time and wrapped so good nothing was damaged .I will definitely call e- trailer for my next order.

by:

Customer recently at RV park when lightning strike caused voltage spike, damaged several circuits in RV. A must for protecting RV AC electrical. Also analyses AC circuit quality at the RV park panel, before plugging RV into panel.

by:

Received the correct part as ordered. The part was double box packed, and arrived in good condition. Im unable to rate at this time as my trailer is in storage. It appears to be heavy duty and well made, will find out in future when its put to use. Thank you for your service it was easy and pleasant purchase experience with etrailer.

by:

A must have for your RV. Cheaper than the damage that can be done with a bad electrical surge!!!

by:

Excellent product at the right price.

by:

Very easy to use with a easy 3 light diagnosis to let you know the electrical source you are plugging into is wired correctly.

by:

Hard to say anything negative, I haven't experienced any issues that I would need the defender for. It does give me a solid piece of mind knowing it's there though.

  • What To Do If You Get An Open Neutral Error Code With The Camco RV Power Defender
If the "open neutral" lights are on in the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone # CAM55312 then there's an issue with the power pedestal and a qualified electrician will need to open it up and investigate the issue. It could be as simple as a loose connection, but it's impossible to know without physically looking at it and troubleshooting it. You won't won't to connect to the pedestal until an electrician has a chance to fix the issue.

  • Troubleshooting A Camco Dogbone RV Surge Protector
It definitely could be a burnt out light or some other internal issue with the Camco RV Power Defender # CAM55312, but the only way to really test that theory would be to connect to an outlet that had an open ground or neutral to see if the red light kicks on and the left yellow light remained off. I don't recommend testing this as you could potentially cause an electrical fire. Unfortunately Camco doesn't make it to where you can actually fix any issues with the # CAM55312 and at this...

  • Hooking Up Surge Protector for 30 Amp Camper to Plug Into 50 Amp Power Source
If your camper is wired for 30 amps I highly recommend using a 30 amp surge protector. The potential issue with using a higher-rated 50 amp surge protector is that it wouldn't be triggered soon enough to protect any appliances you have that are rated for 30 amps. To hook up your 30 amp camper to a 50 amp power source you will want to first connect a 30 amp voltage protector (like the Camco # CAM55301 for a reseting protector or # CAM55312 for a one-time-use protector) to the camper. I spoke with my contact at Camco regarding your RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer # CAM55312. He said that if the blue surge protector light is no longer illuminating on your unit then it has experienced a surge episode (and protected your RV!). This may have happened with your 30 amp home outlet or it could have happened the previous time you used the analyzer at a campsite. Since this particular model provides one-time-event protection, it is no longer able to provide surge protection...
