2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

So easy to find the right hitch for my vehicle. My PHEV will only tow 1500 lbs so I purchased for a bike rack. Very fast delivery. After reading all the reviews and with the weight of the hitch my 75 year old husband didn't feel uper comfortable with install. We checked with our local mechanic shop and they installed the next day for $[XX]

by:

Overall it's a high quality hitch. Unfortunately the holes were not drilled to align with my vehicle frame. Also, there was not an access hole in the frame to fit the pieces as directions requested.

by:

The tow bar fit perfect, except the hardware package needs changed. On the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Where the small bolt screws into the frame there is no but welded to the inside, I had to buy a nut and make a tool to insert the nut inside the frame while I screwed in the small bolt. The hardware set should have a fish wire, a stove bolt with a holding bar and nut.

Well...the hitch receiver never made it onto my car, because it doesn't actually fit. This would be the third time I have installed a hitch on my own, and this one was no good. This was to go on a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Prior hitch receivers that I have installed had 2 bolts on each side that attached to the frame. This one has the 2 bolts on each side, plus one set of bolts that go from a flange to the frame. I assume this extra bolt is to counter torsion on the receiver. BUT, in order to attached the bolt, you need to thread a washer (provided with the kit) THROUGH THE FRAME! guess what...the washer is too bog too fit through the opening in the frame. I only found this out after fishing the fishing wire (provided) through the frame. the other 2 bolts that are the "normal" ones, are maligned, so putting them in was extremely difficult. Ultimately, I dismounted it and have it holding down papers in my garage. I would NOT recommend this for a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

You mentioned that the washer did not fit through the hole in the frame and that the bolts were misaligned. I wanted to ask a few follow up questions. Was the washer too big to enter the frame or too big to move within the frame? When you say that the bolts were misaligned can you tell me in more detail what you mean?

Dive out was a year ago, i will go by best recollection. As I recall, the nut was too large to fit through the hole to enter the frame. If it got stuck in the pass through phase, i probably would have lost it within the frame. Regarding the alignment... It was tough. I really had to wrestle the unit into place and hammer the bolts through because of the lack of play. What i will probably wind up doing is trying to grind down the nuts to fit, and out that doesnt work have a mechanic weld the hitch to the frame at those points. Welding of course will cost me money, and compromise the finish on the frame so i am not happy with that option.

I would not recommend welding the hitch as it would void the warranty on the hitch and would not be safe. I recommend using a die grinder or Dremel type tool to enlarge the opening to fit the nut through into the frame.

Robert was awesome he was able to find the hitch I needed quickly. Great job.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

This hitch worked great and any sensible mechanic could install it quickly. I had no lift and limited open end wrenches and so strategy was required in the order of bolts installed and tightened. I did have an air impact wrench and that made up some time used up in planning and turning one of the nuts a sixteenth turn per wrench placement... it took me about an hour including removing the towing hook point.
I'm especially happy because I bought this vehicle (Mitsu Outlander) for light towing as my older ICE minivan started needing repairs. I didn't bother to insist upon the tow bar as part of the purchase price for the PHEV and was dismayed to find that NOBODY was offering this tow bar for the PHEV version (in summer 2018). When I finally committed to buying the dealer bar, it was two times the price that I paid etrailer (just the part cost) but I was all set to pay it when I learned that the lighting kit (the dealer was also charging hundreds for) was going to require an 11 hour service fee. I got a refund on all the parts and resigned myself to that fact that I'd really miscalculated when I bought the car... and then found this kit on etrailer a week later. Thank-you for the great product.. now I'm about to order your lights... hope that has a good result. A big thanks to those who posted reviews of the bar.. gave me incentive to try it!!

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

Does the trick once installed and is aesthetically unobtrusive. However, characterizing the install as "Easy" and 30 min for a novice is optimistic. The main issue is the obstruction (battery well) very close to the nuts on the left hand side mounting points. It is only possible to get a very low profile (0.4" thick) combination wrench between the end of the bolt and the obstruction (see pictures) and other obstructions limit the rotation of the wrench to almost nothing. Generating the necessary torque with a short 8" long combination wrench under these conditions is near impossible. The instructions call for a dog bone adapter to use a torque wrench, but this is a very special order item. I can't comment if this actually works since I don't have one yet. Special tools like this should be included with the hitch. Also, shorter bolts might allow more tool options, like a ratcheting combination wrench.

by:

Sturdy, perfect fit, and cosmetically nice. Installation kit was complete and instructions were clear.

One annoying thing happened to me during the install on my Outlander PHEV. I didn't have a dog bone torque adapter so I used a flex head ratcheting gear wrench. I slipped the box end over the nut and started tightening. As I did, the car frame began to compress slightly. This caused the bolt to creep ahead toward a protrusion on the frame. Now the gap between the bolt and the frame was narrowed such that I couldn't remove the wrench. I suspect a box end dog bone adapter would have been trapped in the same way. If you think that clearance might be a problem after you torque the nut down, consider using an open end tool.

Unless you do a lot of automotive work, my guess is not many folks have a dog bone set. Perhaps Curt could consider adding one to the install kit?

by:

Very satisfied with my trailer hitch. I have had it for a year, and it has been perfect. Thank you, etrailer.com. It was great to find the exact model I needed at a much lower price than the dealership.

by:

This is a one-year anniversary of purchasing the hitch for my Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I've kind of had time to forget how painful it was to crawl around under my car for a couple of hours, struggling to tighten the last bolt. But now it all feels worth it. I got a solid hitch that looks great and works great for way less than I would have if I had the dealer install it. Worth some discomfort lying on the ground cursing tight spaces on the underside of my car.

2019 Mitsubishi Outlander

I got this installed, but it was a bit of a hassle. There are 2 extra bolts and washers that I didn't find a use for, likely because this 2019 Outlander PHEV does not have nuts welded to the holes for the 1 bolt on each side that installs vertically. So, you have to use the fish wire to pull the rectangular plate with the square hole for the carriage bolt, and the carriage bolt. No big deal, right? Except that there are no holes in the frame that are large enough to fit the rectangular plate OR thew head of the carriage bolt through the frame.
My solution was to slightly embiggen one of the nearby holes in the frame with a step-bit. Just enough so I could slip the plate and the carriage bolt through, allowing me to use the fish wire as suggested. I also then had to use a rattle can of paint to protect the bare metal at the site of the hole embiggenment.

Also, good luck getting a torque wrench in there for all of these bolts. I torqued mine to 3 Ugga-Duggas.

I do think this is a good product, and would buy it again, but want other buyers to be aware as they weigh DIY vs. a pro install.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

I almost can't believe that I could find a hitch that is a perfect fit for my vehicle and that I could install it so easily myself. The installation instructions were detailed and clear, and everything lined up perfectly despite the tight spacing of some obstructions built in to the vehicle itself (e.g. the exhaust and muffler).

by:

Great product information when completing research. Made the purchase that much easier to know it fit my exact vehicle. Product packaging and shipping was within hours, great customer service.

by:

Installed on a Mitsu phev and it went on well with just a little mod to align one bolt hole but other then that bolted up easily and total install time about 45 min. It is an excellent and very strong hitch and has not rusted so far in the first year in Minnesota salt and snow.

by:

Worked well however the bolts need a way to tighten up that is easier. Overall quality was great

  • Recommended Trailer Ball Mount for 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The correct ball mount for your vehicle will depend on the height of the hitch on your Outlander. When we installed a hitch like # C13398 on your vehicle, we found that the inside top of the receiver tube was about 11 inches above the ground. Since the average trailer coupler height is between 16-18 inches, you'll want a ball mount that provides about 6 inches of rise. Since the # C45036 you'd looked at provides a 2 inch drop, it wouldn't be a good choice. To figure out the exact rise...
