Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

I have no concerns about the trailer hitch. It's still solidly supporting my bike carrier. Installation was not as simple as it looks in the video (it never is) but we managed it ourselves. It looks very good on the vehicle.

I use the hitch regularly and its still working very well. I have used it for my bike carrier and to tow a small rental trailer. It has really improved the versatility of my vehicle.

by:

Hi. Here are some pictures of my installation finished. I think it looks quite nice. One thing I would suggest is to add a trailer hitch cover to the package. As you can see it makes for a very clean appearance. Thank you. Lloyd

Lost a bolt and they wanted to charge for all the hardware all over again, horrible way to treat customers

by:
2013 BMW X1

Quality Heavy duty construction and welds, easy installation with the correct tools.
I have a bike rack and motorcycle carrier both with the 2" reciever connect, and with the xx tounge weight it will easily handle both.

by:
2014 BMW X1

Installation video made all the difference. Once I had all the tools, it took me just over an hour to install the hitch by myself. Getting the hitch to line up with the bolts was the hardest part. My suggestion is to get some really bright floodlights to help you see exactly where to slide it on.

No idea what Mr. Moore is going on about. Maybe back in 2013 they hadn't done the instructions well yet. The instructions I received were absolutely excellent with fantastic, clear directions and very very clear and detailed diagrams. That's not to say the instructions are perfect, there are some deficiencies.

The tools required include a rivet gun for the 1/4" plastic rivets. Stupid, since that's quite a large size rivet and small handheld rivet guns only go to 3/16". Usually for rivets that large you'd use a pneumatic tool. However since the rivets are just plastic, you can just use pliers.

And the rivets supplied were the wrong size for my 2014 vehicle. The grip was too long. I went to BMW and got 2 OEM rivets for $3.50, they have them in stock since they are use-once parts and they need them all the time. You could get roughly equivalent rivets from NAPA or wherever.

I'd recommend removing the ECV (exhaust control valve) from its bracket, rather than trying to work around it "very carefully" as the instructions suggest. Much easier that way.

Fit is perfect.

It is tricky to get the right angles to fasten the flange nuts, but it can be done. Forget about being able to torque them with the rear upper fascia still installed.

Frank C.

11/14/2014

oops Ive since learned there is a specialized rivet gun for plastic rivets. So the directions werent necessarily wrong there, I was just not knowledgeable.

by:

The install was a good half-day job. Make sure you have the 12pt socket for the exhaust hanger, and a helper to do the lift. The video on here was great, all the instructions you could need.

by:

It fit like it was supposed to, I had to use a bottle jack to push the frame out about a sixteeth inch in order to squeeze the thing in there but it made it such a tight fit and it worked really well
It’s been at least a year now hauling close to its stated max limit, and all is well.

by:
2015 BMW X1

Delivery was faster than expected. Install was extremely easy and took about an hour. Instructions were right on. Once installed, top nuts were harder to get to due to the washers as spacers. All in all it went better than expected and beat the heck out of the factory option cost.

by:

BMW X1s don't come with a trailer hitch. There is no factory option. So, if you want to tow a trailer or just a bike rack, you have to pay big bucks or get your hands dirty. I chose the latter and am enjoying the fruits of my labor. Etrailer's Draw-Tite MaxFrame 75761 was a perfect, if tight, fit. To make it work you need to temporarily undo some of BMW's bumper support and manhandle the mounting brackets onto the bolts past the muffler. The most difficult task is tightening the bolts. A flat ratchet, rather than a socket set is almost a must. When you are done, you have a unobtrusive factory look. It helps with the wiring that on the 2013-15 X1 the battery is in the back and you don't need to run the cables into the engine compartment in the front. I have used my trailer hitch now for over a year without problems for bike racks, utility and motorcycle trailers. Fully satisfied.

by:
2012 BMW X1

I install this on a 2012 BMW X1. It fits like a glove and tucks up under the bumper very nice. The installation says it should take about an hour. That's a little simplistic in my opinion. It took a few hours and a lot of sweat. I installed in in my garage with the car up on jacks, so I was on my back lifting it up over my head. Not ideal. Removing the lower plastic parts of the rear bumper was more difficult than I thought. That's BMW's issue. If I can offer a hint, loosen off the bumper bolts a lot to allow it to slide away from the car. It makes swinging the hitch over the bumper bolts a lot easier. The hitch is very much as advertised. A good purchase as far as I am concerned.

by:
2015 BMW X1

I just received the hitch and had it installed (without a hitch) if yor pardon the expression. It appears solid and well constructed. I plan to use it for a bike rack and do not plan any towing. I'm sure it will perform well. The order and shipping process was very smooth and efficient. I will not hesitate to do business with you folks in the future

Michael C.

The hitch is working so well I never give it a thought. I got it istalled at U Haul for much less than initially quoted. I use the hitch for a bike rack and it performs flawlessly. I would not hesitate to deal with you folks again.

2014 BMW X1

This product is very good once installed. But the installation process was not pleasant on my X1 (x28 with pan roof), and I fault the instructions. I am impressed with the detail in etrailer's video instruction library- but I may have found a gap: after lots of research, I learned BMW uses two choices of the bumper/reinforcement bar for the same 2014 X1 model (see pic). This may explain why many loved this hitch and a few others hated it due to poor install instructions. Etrailer's video shows a simple square attachment point for the car's bumper (the smaller one), while some cars have the larger one with additional angled plating. This angled plating narrows the clearance for the hitch's top bracket holes when trying to lift into place, making it impossible to install until you first remove the evaporative canister unit. Fortunately, this is not too difficult.
This same bumper makes it impossible to torque the top driver side nut to specifications once the hitch is in place. The only solution is to remove the bumper cover. You will need additional rivets to replace the ones you must remove from the wheel wells in order to take the bumper cover off. It was frustrating to spend a of time figuring this out.
Hope this helps someone.

See attached comments on the directions.

All
steps were easy, but actually fitting the hitch onto the studs took me about 30 minutes since it was a very tight squeeze. The directions say to lift the hitch onto the drivers side first, but if you do this, the other side cannot fit since the hitch hits the car frame. The only way is to lift it evenly onto all 4 studs at once.

Also, the muffler rubber support on the right side should be removed so the muffler can be lowered a few inches. Ideally, if the muffler was completely removed, it may not be that hard.

by:

Fit perfectly however if you have big hands like me make sure your wife or kid is there to reach up to get two of the bolts tight squeeze. Looks great already used it no issues

2015 BMW X1

Have used this trailer hitch on my 2015 BMW X1 on average 2-3 times a week, every week, for 1 year. I use it for a bike rack. No problems with it at all. It took a bit of experience for my mechanic to install it, but he didn't have any problems, took him about an hour. My experience with the hitch in every aspect, from ordering to receipt to installation has been positive. Good product, glad I chose it.

by:
2014 BMW X1

I installed on a 2014. The video was good except for the explanation of the tightening of the flange nuts once the unit is in place. The is simply no space to tighten. I had to remove the next piece of the bumper cover which allowed a socket to tighten all 4 nuts very well. That next piece of bumper just snaps in/out easily with the use of a plastic trim pry too, with no rivets to replace - not sure why removing it is not a part of the instructions as it allows direct access to the nuts with a socket and extension. Hitch looks great and I have no doubt it will serve its purpose.

by:
BMW X1

Great hitch. My X1 does not have a sunroof , so I had to purchase an additional body brace from BMW. Cars with sunroofs already have this brace. This brace is a bolt-on item.

Ive been very pleased with the hitch. I would definitely recommend this hitch and etrailer.

by:
2014 BMW X1

Appreciated the prompt response and delivery. Installation required two people. On my vehicle, the exhaust needed to be loosened for easy install. We needed the hitch to use our bike carrier and small utility trailer.

by:

The product need a a bit more quality control. Went through 2 hitch and few support brace before the fit was ok. The instructions are lacking details and tip. The best way to get it up and install is to loosen the reinforcement bar nuts. The place it up. Or the best way. Remove the bumper. Paint is a bit thin on these. So far it has held up ok.

by:
BMW X1

Very happy so far. I would recommend removal of the rear bumper cover (which required 4 more plastic rivets). On my X1 and with my (rather large) collection of sockets, ratchets and wrenches, I could not properly tighten and torque the mounting bolts without removal of the cover.

by:
2015 BMW X1

The trailer hitch I got performed amazing. Was easy to hook up, instructions were easy to follow. It also sucked up nice and tight, never had a issue with rubbing or bottoming out

by:
2013 BMW X1

Installs pretty easy but the video on etrailer website doesn't show them taking the whole rear bumper off. This may be required if you don't have the right tools to get into a tight space and tighten the upper mounting bolts.

I was having a very difficult time finding a rack that fit my vehicle and I was able to contact etrailer and Carmel was extremely helpful. She was very knowledgeable about the products I needed and was able to give me information to help me make the correct decision based on my needs. Thanks to Carmel I was able to get the hitch I needed in a timely manner. I can't thank her enough for her assistance and professionalism. I am the GM of a collision center and I will do business with etrailer in the future.

  • Best Hitch Receiver for a Bike Rack on a 2014 BMW X1
The Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # C13140 requires the Support Strap # 18050 for any non-trailer loads. Curt requires this strap on all their Class I and II hitches and some of their Class III hitches. If you do not use the strap then it is in violation of their manufacturer's warranty. Draw-Tite does not feel the strap is necessary so they do not require it on their hitches. A large difference between them is the towing capacity. The Curt is rated much lower at 2500 lbs. while the...

The Draw Tite hitch for your 2014 BMW X1 # 75761 that you referenced has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs. This means that if your motorcycle carrier weighs less than 90 lbs like the etrailer # e98873 which weighs 58 lbs you'd be totally fine. I looked up your vehicle towing capacity and it appears to have a higher capacity than this as well.

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III that you are referring to, # 75761, is the same hitch for both the 2012 and 2013 models of the BMW X1. Any changes made by BMW between those two years did not change the fit of the trailer hitch receiver. To use this hitch receiver for towing purposes, I would recommend using an adjustable ball mount like the Curt Channel Style Adjustable Ball Mount, # C45900.
