Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear threshold plate, trunk liner, and tail light assemblies to access this harness.

Tail Light Connecter Diagram

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your side storage compartment.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits. This unit will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring.

2013 Volkswagen Tiguan

Etrailer was great and I received it a day before expected, but instalation was awfull they want everything ran inside the vehicle which is not possible when hooking the power wire to the battery and I was not drilling holes. The 4 flat plug stays inside the vehicle until used but I felt that it was not a great idea to pinch wires in my trunk when I wanted to use it. I ended up finding a plug on the passenger side rear that I ran the plug and the power wire through a factory grommet and ran the power wire very carefully underneath.

by:
2015 Volkswagen Tiguan

Works great have used it on and off for about a year. Only difficult thing to install is running the wire to the front of the vehicle for power neatly. Other then that straightforward on a 2015 Tiguan. Would definitely recommend.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

I purchased this product for a 2017 VW Tiguan. I had originally ordered and installed the Curt Wiring Harness for this same vehicle but there was a problem with the module not functioning correctly when the headlights where turned on. I returned the Curt product and ordered this Tekonsha. It installed in no time at all and works perfectly. Having the opportunity to actually physically hold both products in my hands I would say the Tekonsha looks and feels "beefier" compared to its Curt counterpart. It also comes with a 15 amp breaker compared to the 10 amp breaker the Curt offers. I would recommend this product.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

I watched the install video and knew right away I was going try interior routing the power wire because I don't have access to a lift. I found a grommet in the firewall where I think the clutch pedal would go. I was afraid I might run out of wire routing it this way. That didn't happen. Had about 3 ft leftover. Everything else went just like in the video. I ordered the tester they used to check my work. Success!!

Easy install. Plug and play. Watched video and followed directions. Works first time. Uhaul wanted $389 plus tax to install hitch and wire lights. Cost me $120 to complete job in about an hour.

Another great hitch and wiring. Installed on Tiguan already.Takes 15 minutes, wiring takes 30 minutes. Still towing 25 yr old aluminum trailer I built.
I will add a basket for gas cans weld one up or buy one? Don't know yet looking through junk pile for steel.
Should last until I get hit again, the hitch will help in an impact.
Last one on Camry took 45 mph hit from rear stopped at light. impact bent the frame
totaled car.
will re -cut and weld the old hitch into something else.

Trailer lights wiring kit was "as ordered" & install went smoothly after watching the video online (hard-copy instructions were marginal at best). Seems to get the job done so far.

Product worked well for about 6 months and now the trailer lights stay on the whole time it’s plugged in. Have to unplug the lights in order to get them to go off

This sounds like there is a short somewhere in the lighting system. Check for any bare, damaged wires along your trailer and on your vehicles wiring harness. Make sure there are no spots where the insulation has worn off the wiring or where the wiring is pinched and allowing the bare wire to touch bare metal. Repair or replace damaged sections of wiring and see if that solves the issue of the trailer lights staying on all of the time.

by:
2015 Volkswagen Tiguan

This unit provides connection to the trailer lights. The VW, like many modern cars, have added complex lighting circuitry to keep the driver informed of a blown bulb, which means a simple hookup to the trailer lights is no longer possible. This unit provides separate power for the trailer lights, thus keeping the VW system from thinking there’s a problem with the vehicle lights. Once hooked up, it worked great for my small trailer (regular tail/stop/turn lights, plus 4 more marker lights).
Installation too nearly two hours, most of that trying to figure out how to remove various plastic pieces from the rear of the car. First side took me over an hour, second side much quicker as I learned the tricks.
The lights connection comes from the back side of the car’s two tail lights, with a connection you plug in without any cutting or changing the vehicle wires. Then you need to provide 12v power to the small black box that this kit provides for trailer light control. The instructions call for running a wire (provided) up to the battery, but our ’15 Tiguan has a power plug in the rear cargo area so I elected to draw 12v power from there. Only downside is that the power plug is only hot when the vehicle’s on, so if you park the car and put on the flashers then the trailer lights will not be flashing. When the car is on, everything works perfectly.
I installed the trailer wire pigtail in the right side wheel well, so I just open the hatch, pull the plastic cover panel, run my trailer pigtail to the trailer and shut the hitch. When not in use, the wire and the draw hitch ball mount, plus a pair of gloves, are hidden behind the plastic cover.
Overall, a great bargain compared to the cost of the VW unit!

I wanted to reach out to you in regards to your review on the wiring harness. You mentioned that the harness was not working for you and I wanted to see if you could explain in more detail what is happening with it. We do have a FAQ that can help with troubleshooting on the harness.

by:
2014 Volkswagen Tiguan

The wiring harness arrived quickly and was complete. The etrailer video was clear and showed all of the steps necessary to correctly install the wiring. It is really time-consuming to run the power lead to the battery without a lift for the car, but it can be done with patience and some jacks. I am a novice at any type of auto work and I got it done in a couple of hours. Great product and great directions!

by:

The electrical harness install was quick and easy as described in the instructions and the video. My only challenge was running the wire under the car as it’s harder if you don’t have a car lift which I dont. Have used the system for a year and all is still working and in good shape, great product!

by:

Extremely pleased with the wiring harness. Since my towing requirements are light, I purchased a 12V male plug that I wired to the harness. It works perfectly as there is a 12V outlet in the cargo area. Far easier than running a 16ft wire under the car and up to the battery.

by:
2013 Volkswagen Tiguan

The hitch was a perfect fit and thanks to your video the profit wiring harness was also easy to install. For my 2013 VW Tiguan I got the Curt hitch and love the look. It is perfectly flush with the rear bumper. You are not going to bang your chins when you get item out of your trunk. VW help out by drill and anchoring the hitch bolts. I have put hitch on other cars and this was 10 times easier. No dropping down muffler and trying to get torch wrenches between frames and body panels with 2 inches of throw.

In the spring of 2021 I purchased and installed a Teckonsha trailer wiring harness in our 2017 VW Tiguan. The instructions were easy to follow and the installation was straight forward - taking approximately 90 minutes to complete.
The wiring has worked flawlessly.
I would recommend this product.

by:

The hitch kit arrived on time and had clear instructions ansd easy to install. Working well after 1 year

by:

The wiring kit was easy to install. No cutting or splicing was reqired. It connected to the existing car harness rhrough the taillights. By watching the existing video from your website upfront, I knew what I had to do.
Very good product.

by:
2015 Volkswagen Tiguan

The wiring harness was easy to install and took me about 30-40 minutes to complete. I followed the video on the website, which helped a ton. If you follow along with the etrailer video, then the install will be a snap. The hardest part was routing the wire up to the battery, but that's just because I couldn't put the car on a lift so I was crawling around on the ground to get the wire routed properly. Everything worked the first time after install!

Im trying to get wiring on my 2012 Tiguan. Which vehicle did you install on? Any hints? Thanks!Matt

Frank S.

9/22/2015

Matt, installation was relatively easy, took me about 3 hours though because it was difficult to pass the wire from back of the tiguan to the battery through the Firewall. The box that is part of the wire harness sits in the cavity next to the right tail light. The plug-and-play nature of this set trumps that of older splice and pray styles. The easy part was unplugging the wire harness thats already connected and plugging in the one supplied by e- trailer. if you can follow the directions and have a good head on your shoulders you should be fine. You will need,a pry tool, to remove paneling.a socket wrench seta wire strippersome spare wire connectors in case you crimp the one they provide poorly - I didnt solder anything but thats not to say you shouldnt if you chose to do so. a cobalt tipped drill bit set to get through the firewall. - i chose a spot directly under the glove box and ran the wires across the engine from the battery. be sure to avoid to O2 line and a testerThe left and right blinker will work with the tester when installation is complete.Im assuming the brakes require a closed circuit on the flat four because they worked when we connected my girlfriends 1969 lo liner to it.

Matt F.

Frank,Thanks for the advice. Does it matter whether you mount behind the right or left tail light?Again, thanks for the advice.-Matt

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan

Bought a tiguan tow package. The videos were for a 2009 tiguan and a 2012 tuereg, which had some differences, but still very easy to hook up. Quick delivery too! Very happy with the product. Saved me 400$ at least I bet! I have to have my lights on for the trailer lights to work, which I'm not sure is 100% correct, but whatever.

by:

Overall this is a good product that’s simple to install. I didn’t give all five stars because the yellow wire that crosses the back of the car is not long enough and had to be extended. the quality of the included splices are laughably poor.

There is room for improvement on the flat fire harness to to the hitch as well. There isn’t a good way to get the 4-pin connector that goes to the trailer out of the vehicle included. You really have to cut it off and splicing it back in; the instructions prefer to gloss over this part and just vaguly say you need to get it to the hitch area. I went though an existing grommet in the floor on the passenger side for the backup light and then used a pluggable connector I purchased locally. Shipping this harness with pins installed on the flat harness so they can be pulled though the grommet and then inserted into a connector would be a very simple solution.
