How to Upgrade 4-Way on 2016 VW Tiguan to Use with Curt Echo for Powering Trailer Brakes
Question:
Hi, I installed the aftermarket wiring harness you all sell for the VW Tiguan here 118675 How would I make this work with the Echo Wireless Brake Controller if I were to install trailer brakes on my trailer?

With the Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness # 118675 already installed on your 2016 VW Tiguan (thank you for your business!), you will just need to upgrade it to a 7-Way connector with the 12V pin activated to use with the Curt Echo # C51180 for powering brakes on your trailer. Any trailer brake controller will require this type of upgrade, although the Echo absolutely offers the easiest install process and operation thereafter.
To upgrade the 4-Way you will just need the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L. This kit includes the 7-Way adapter harness, which will plug right into that Tekonsha 4-Way to provide the 7-Way at the other end. Then it's just a matter of using the included wiring to activate the 7-Way's 12V circuit by running wire from that pin up to the Tiguan's battery.
I have attached the written install manual below, along with a sample video review that you can check out as well.
Once you have the new 7-Way in place you're ready to use the Echo and pull a trailer with electric brakes. The Echo simply plugs into the 7-Way itself and pairs to your smart phone via Bluetooth. Unlike with most other brake controllers, this eliminates the need to wire in or mount anything else inside the vehicle, as your phone is what you will use to adjust any settings or activate the manual override (emergency brake). Otherwise the Echo will automatically send power back to the trailer brakes whenever it senses deceleration on your VW.
I have included a short video demonstration on the Curt Echo as well.
