Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, locate the power cable stud on the driver's side. Then connect the fuse holder wire with the ring terminal to the stud.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because your vehicle runs on a multiplex wiring system, the wiring needs to be converted to be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Got what I ordered. Etrailer never disa ppoints.

2008 Volvo XC90

Very easy installation on the XC90. Clipped off the flat 4 connector and picked up a power line directly from the battery for wiring to a 7 blade connector (pulling a 2 horse trailer with the XC90 V8 Sport). When wiring this up, take the battery out of the vehicle which makes dressing the wires much easier and also gives you access to the battery power distribution strip if you are running a hot line back to the connector. This harness saves a lot of time and is a more reliable connection. All lights and functions work great.

Was installed a yeAR AGO - WORKS PERFECTLY AND A FAIRLY EASY INSTALL.

Ordered on a Tuesday arrived on fri installed on sat. No lift one person took alittle over an hour to wrestle hitch into place and complete wiring

Installation of this wiring harness went really smoothly. Another review had said they had difficulty in reaching/seeing the connection point inside of the Volvo XC90 but I found the gray connector is connected inside the compartment with a plastic barb - so once I pulled that free I was able to see what I was doing. It was a real time saver to be able to simply plug in the connetiions with no need for making splices or having to worry about which wire goes where. It IS a little inconvenient to have the flat plug running out through the tailgate and so I routed my trailer plug out of the bottom through an existing rubber boot/grommet near the battery (which required spliceing the lead but it works GREAT.

My wiring harness is working just as perfectly as the day I installed it. I put a tiny bit of dielectric grease in the boot to keep the connectdisconnect easy and I’m a very satisfied customer

Volvo

Product was fairly easy to install, however the recommended installation location of the four pin connector jack was, at best, bush league. If installed to directions, the plug is to be stored inside the vehicle and be draped out of the tailgate when towing.

The manufacturer should design a way to disconnect the four wire lead, so it can be easily threaded through a Volvo grommet and reconnected to the harness. The four wire plug should then be attached to the receiver for both use and storage.

You can easily run this through the bottom...and get an extension of the 4 prong as you described. Often when 4 prongs hang out the vehicle they will eventually corrode. Youll want that extension to easily pull off and replace every 3-5 years. Done this twice on my XC70s and now researching XC90s

Thanks for the information Shawn. If you would like an extension we have the Spectro Wiring # 9653P, but do be aware we do recommend using dielectric grease like # 11755. We also recommend using a mounting bracket like the # 18144, and if you would like a no-drill option we offer the # 18140 or # 18136 that can be used with the # 18144 to secure the 4-flat mounting bracket to your hitch without drilling.

I haven't been able to find a email related to the receiver hitch that I purchased from you and that is the item that I was considering writing the reviews for. When I received the box I didn't notice any damage but when I went to install it. It was bent and would not install.

2010 Volvo XC90

I purchased a Drawtite hitch for my 2010 Volvo XC90 . The shipping info was provided quickly and the hitch and wiring harness kit arrived in a few days . Today I installed the hitch it took about 30 minutes once on the lift . Instructions were accurate and the hitch fit perfectly with zero issues . I haven't installed the wiring kit yet but I'm sure that will be no issue either . I would order again with no hesitation .

Richard

The hitch is still performing well which is to be expected . The wiring harness install was a breeze definitely much easier than splicing like the old days .

2009 Volvo XC90

Bought wire harness (item 118411) for a 2009 XC90 3.2 AWD. Installation was exactly as the description and video mentioned. Have had no problems with the quality or workmanship of the product. Item to note- I had the harness exit the rear of the vehicle from the bottom of the lower tailgate as the pinch area was rubber and loose enough to allow the wire to shift if necessary and not tight enough to crush the harness. Great product.

Andy S.

7/30/2016

Its been a year now and the trailer harness has worked to perfection. No drain on the cars electrical system and the mating connector has held up like new. Also, considering that the wire harness must exit the vehicle pinched between the upper and lower tailgate the harness has not been compromised at all due in part to the quality of the harness sheathing and the rubber seals on the tailgates. Item to note on the XC90- run the harness out the center of the tailgate rather than the rear left side or you run the risk of burning the harness with exhaust gases.

2014 Volvo XC90

Etrailer video on the installation was so good, I watched it before I ordered and was able to install it in 45 minutes without any further references to the video and instructions. I was so confident in my install that I had my 14 year old son watch me install it and talked him through the process as though I was an expert. Worked perfectly on my Volvo XC90 2011.

Works GREAT. Stays hidden when not in use.

by:

This appears to be a very high quality product. I connected it all in about 15 minutes. you cant actually see the wires that you have to disconnect but thanks to the video on this website it made it much easier to see. The only reason I didn't give this video 5 stars is I do not like the fact that the wire hangs out the tailgate. I bought an extension for the 4 plug trailer harness and will look for a way to run the wire through a grommet or something to the outside for a correct finish in the future. It would be nice if etrailer figured out a way to do this, even if it involves some drilling or something and provided a video for more capable installers to have another option for a more finished look.

There are a couple of reasons Tekonsha recommends installing the trailer wiring harness you purchased so that the trailer connector is stored in the interior of the vehicle. Installing the connector in this manner greatly simplifies the installation, making it much easier for those who arent the most mechanically inclined. This method is typically recommended for vehicles that are primarily passenger vehicles that wouldnt be used for full-time towing. Keeping the connector in the cargo area of the vehicle helps protect the connector from the elements and from damage from road debris. The weatherstripping on the rear hatch or trunk of the vehicle is plenty thick enough so that closing the door on the wiring harness wont harm it, as long as the wires are kept away from the latch. I used a set-up similar to this for towing my PWC trailer for years, and it worked great.

by:

I am not a mechanic, but somewhat handy.. I found this to be super easy to install, and was able to reference the great videos that etrailer.com provides. If I get another vehicle, I will surely do my own wiring for adding a trailer. Thanks for making this very easy.

relatively easy install. Only time consuming part was interior removal/install to hide the harness, and to run the power wire to battery. Aside from that, the actual harness install as plug and play!

2006 Volvo XC90

Ordered a Draw-Tite Class III hitch and a Tekonsha wiring harness for installation on an SUV. Choosing the appropriate hitch and wiring kit for my particular vehicle was made especially easy given the very thorough video that explained the pros and cons of various products in a side-by-side comparison. Once the products arrived, the instructional installation videos were a significant help in explaining the installation process. I had some concern with in installing the hitch myself as the installation process required disconnecting and slightly lowering the rear portion of the exhaust system on my particular vehicle. The instructional video, tailor-made for my particular vehicle, showed how to do this. I easily installed both products in a couple of hours with no assistance. Kudos to etrailer for great quality products, fantastic up-front virtual customer assistance (videos), clear directions, and ease of installation. This satisfied customer would highly recommend them. They have just added another customer for life!

2014 Volvo XC90

I purchased this wiring harness for my 2014 Volvo XC90 and installation was quick and easy. Total time was about 20 mins, with most of that time fishing for the existing wires in the Volvo. I couldn't beat the price from e-trailer either, this was purchased with the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver (Class III - product 87810) and I installed myself. Total price for both was around $240, as opposed to the Volvo Dealership who wanted over $750 just for the parts and another $150-200 for installation. The video instructions to installation is an extra mile customer service by e-trailer. That video made the installation so easy. I have, and I will continue to, recommend e-trailer to friends.

2011 Volvo XC90

Arrived on time and was pretty easy to install after watching the multiple videos from the etrailer website.

I didn't understand when I ordered this for my 2011 Volvo XC90, but the actual wiring plug stays in the car under the floor in the spare tire compartment, and then you just pull it out through the back hatch and close the hatch on it if you need to hook up trailer lights. I was hoping the connector would mount onto the trailer hitch itself for easier plugging in and also it would look better, but this will work fine.

by:
2008 Volvo XC90

Bought this wiring harness along with an after-market trailer hitch. I don't intend to pull a trailer (bumper carrier only) but I figured I should have lights just in case. Installation was easy. No drilling or modifications needed. Works fine through a test light.

Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90 wiring installationOnce the correct plugs were identified, it was pretty straightforward. The video link was very helpful, but what the instructions may add is that there are THREE sets of grey electrical plugs on each side of the vehicle. EACH of the three plugs is physically different, and two of them are out in the open where you can easily see and reach them. The third, the one you NEED, is tucked in behind the panel and physically attached to the sheet metal of the car, so it is somewhat harder to find, and MUCH harder to access. (the video shows it already located and pulled off the panel, the written instructions are vague and of little help here.)

Alston

3/31/2014

I have the same problem that you had. Except that I cannot get to the connector. How did you get to the connector behind the panel.

Dave

2/19/2016

Yea, that plug was tough to get at. I had to use a screwdriver to work it loose from the sidewall.

2011 Volvo XC90

I ordered a trailer hitch and light package from etrailer.com. The materials arrived on time and were in perfect condition. The installation instruction and videos were precise which made the installation easy. After installation, I trailed a boat 800 miles from Pennsylvania to South Carolina without issue. I highly recommend etrailer.com and I will definitely rely upon them in the future.

by:
2006 Volvo XC90

Almost 5 stars... delivery was on time and most of the install went well. Instructions must have been for a previous model year as I did run into a couple of minor surprises. The harness was purchased as part of a towing package. The hitch install was a bit of real work, but doable and instructions were good. Only missing the receiver pin and clip which Etrailer sent out quickly. Quite satisfied with Etrailer service and products.

It continues to work well, no issues to date.

The hitch fit my vehicle absolutely perfectly and installed within 45 minutes (mostly because I had to lower the exhaust a few inches. The wiring harness for the hitch also installed very easily mainly because of the excellent installation video on the etrailer web site. Great job!

2019 Volvo XC90

I located my connection points for my E-TRAILER harness were tucked behind (and not attached to) the interior panels as shown in the video on how to install this harness into a Volvo XC90. It was a bit cold when I installed it (it was raining as well), so I did not get a video done. I will more than likely do a video sometime in the spring of 2019.

by:
2015 Volvo XC90

I installed the trailer wiring harness for my Volvo XC90 in approximately 15 - 20 minutes. Installation was very simple following the related installation video. Excellent way to show your customers how to install the product since written instructions can be confusing. The connections for the wiring harness connected to the factory plugs perfectly. Excellent product, factory looking installation, fast shipping, and great customer service.
